Visiting new courses for golfers is always fun. It’s a chance to play a course you’ve never played before, and maybe this time you’ll play from the fairways instead of from “you know where.” After all, the new course doesn’t know that you are a lousy golfer. It’s just happy to have your greens fee. My former neighbor, Ed Dent, invited me over to play his home course in McGaheysville – the … [Read more...]
The Chick Turns On
It took a little cold snap and receding water levels - then the Chickahominy River caught fire. Mike Johncox at Riverside Camp in Lanexa says the crappie and the stripers are hungry and are finding their way into fish coolers. “We broke the ice with both crappie and striped action this past week,” Mike said. “Gary and Shirley Belk caught 50 crappie on Friday and 21 more on Saturday. They also … [Read more...]
Carolina Redfish
Capt. Alan Cain Fishing here along the NC coast has been good up until this last week’s bad weather, but with a few more days of tide flow the water should clear up quickly. We have been having some very good days targeting schools of redfish on the low tides and tailing redfish on the flood tides. Flounder fishing has also been very good with lots of quality 3-5lb. flounder being … [Read more...]
Goodbye Little Hummers
They finally left this past week: Our resident hummingbirds, which have graced our sugar-water feeders for the past several months. We worried that they may have stayed too long in Virginia and perhaps our feeders were tempting the tiny creatures to overstay their visit. Not to worry. Just before the first frost, our hummers headed south. I wish them Godspeed. Here are some hummingbird … [Read more...]
Obey the Pack Laws
What Boomer can ever forget that first uniform of his or her youth, likely from being a member of Cub Scouts or Brownies. I clearly recall that royal blue shirt with the bright yellow kerchief - my Cub Scout uniform in 4th grade. As a new scout recruit, I was fascinated by the badges and emblems, and I wanted as many as I could pin or sew on my uniform. They didn’t cost that much and I figured … [Read more...]
Personal Spas & Swim Spas Perfected
Fall is here. What could be better than slipping into a toasty warm hot tub and enjoying a relaxing soak in a Bullfrog Spa? But there are other options as well. How about a little exercise or physical fitness regime in a swim spa? A swim spa is a perfect way to improve your swim stroke, stay in shape or convalesce, even when the pool is closed. Whatever your needs, Richard Pleasant, the owner of … [Read more...]
Road Trip to CrossKeys
Boy, this would be a good weekend to get out, take a little road trip and see the beautiful colors of the changing autumn leaves. It would also be a good time to visit a Virginia vineyard and maybe hear some great music while savoring a bottle of crisp, white wine. What if you could do all this and enjoy some delicious food in a beautiful Shenandoah Valley setting? You can, at CrossKeys Vineyards … [Read more...]
My Personal Caddy
They say it’s bad if you have more than 100 thoughts going through your mind while you’re making a golf swing, so I try to think about only 20 or 30 things – which is why I’ll record lots of 6s and 7s on my score card instead of 4s and 5s. I’ve only had a caddy two or three times in my golfing career, but if I had good sense, I’d serve as my own caddy with these few, simple … [Read more...]
Sausage & Grits Casserole
Twice a year, four of my buddies and I head for Cliff View Inn in Alleghany county where we fish, play golf, tell old war stories, harass each other unmercifully and have a great time. Probably too good of a time. For this biannual gathering, I serve as the cook – every meal. The prime reason for this personal sacrifice is that if I didn’t do it, and didn’t buy the groceries, we’d likely eat … [Read more...]
Fall on the Outer Banks
It’s a great time to be on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, especially if you’re in a fishing boat. The Oregon Inlet Fishing Center says that it’s great fall fishing right now. Norma notes that the fish are cooperating after the storm. OFFSHORE: Anglers, including those from a make-up charter group, brought in good numbers of mahi mahi, near limits of yellow-fin tuna, and good numbers of … [Read more...]
