Dr. Julie Ball reports: Gusty winds, crazy fronts and unseasonal drops in temperatures are making it a challenge for the spring saltwater season to come together. Croaker are now available in various areas in the Bay, especially near Willoughby, Ocean View, Little Creek and Buckroe, where pier anglers are using squid and bloodworms. The bigger hardheads are still coming from the lower Bay … [Read more...]

Camping and the Average Man
During the course of the life of an average man, there come a few times when he takes complete leave of his senses and does incredibly stupid things – like go camping. After rising to the top of the food chain and having access to things like heat pumps, wide screen TVs and multiple jet showers, some average men deem it desirable to forego the pleasantries of life and live among a cluster of other … [Read more...]
Grilled Italian Chicken Breasts
A recipe does not have to be fancy in order to be good. In fact, sometimes the simplest and easiest recipes are the best. Such is the case with chicken breasts. Recently, my wife Nancy went to the store, as I was on my way home from a trip. We have been trying to eat healthy and therefore eat a lot of chicken, so she picked up some skinless chicken breasts, but she bought the thin cut, not the … [Read more...]
The Catbird’s Seat
Most of my backyard birds are year round residents, but a few show up in spring and depart in the fall. Catbirds, like hummingbirds, are among those species. For the past several years, a pair of catbirds has nested in a hedge behind our house. Earlier this week, I saw one of the catbirds return to the yard and feeder. They are really quite interesting. Some confuse catbirds with cowbirds. They … [Read more...]
Shad On The Run
Mark Scott of Charlottesville reports: I fished the Chickahominy River at Walker's Dam on April 18. Bob Kramer, also from Charlottesville, went with me. He had never been shad fishing, so that is now off of his bucket list. We fished with our guide, host and good friend, Jon Lamb, who did an incredible job of putting us on and keeping us on the fish. We had a consistent run of Hickory Shad, … [Read more...]
Lake Orange Open For Business
Though Lake Orange is open year round, 24-7, the bait shop and marina, Angler’s Landing is now open for the season, renting boats and dispensing bait and tips. Darryl Kennedy, who runs Anglers Landing, says his fish are biting. “The water is clear and the temperature is staying around the mid 50s,” Darryl noted. “The largemouth bass and crappie are in a pre-spawn pattern. Anglers using live … [Read more...]
Bluefish Are In the Bay
By Dr. Ken Neill, III Bluefish are in the bay and inside of Rudee Inlet in particular. Anglers fishing inside of Rudee are managing nice catches of blues, some speckled trout, some flounder and croaker. The wind has really slowed down fishing activity. When anglers can get out, tautog action is excellent on structures inside the bay and on the ocean wrecks on out to the Triangle … [Read more...]
Welcome Chickadees
It looks like my bluebird friends will nest elsewhere this spring, but I was delighted to see that a pair of chickadees has moved into the bluebird house on the fence. I was smoking a cigar and reading my Sports Illustrated out in the back yard yesterday afternoon and caught a glimpse of just the blur of something entering the bluebird house. I watched intently for a full 10 minutes before she … [Read more...]
Spatchcock Chicken (Sandwiches)
This past week, I ate the best chicken sandwich I have ever put in my mouth. It was moist, succulent, full of flavor and tender beyond description. It came from a breast of a chicken which I had previously cooked “spatchcock style.” Originally, the word spatchcock meant a young, male chicken, but somehow the term came to signify a method of preparing a chicken, by removing the entire backbone, … [Read more...]
