If you’ve waited until late July to take your summer vacation at a Nags Head cottage – your timing is very good. Capt. Reese Stecher of Beach Bum Guide Service says his parties have been catching lots of fish and a wide variety. Just offshore, Stecher has been putting clients on hard fighting amberjacks and the Mahi-Mahi are also close in. Some near shore Mahi’s have been gaffers. The amberjacks … [Read more...]
Catfish Are Jumping
It’s summertime and the living is easy. Fish (catfish) are practically jumping into boats and a top spot has been the Chickahominy River. Mike Johncox of Riverside Camp weighed a couple brutes up to 30 pounds for Chas Hinkle of Chesapeake. Hinkle was dunking live eels. Another Riverside camper, Davis Ransone, also put a 30-pound blue cat in the bottom of his net. Mike says it’s “All you want to … [Read more...]
Storm Clouds
Deborah Gillespie of Bluefield sent this amazing photo to CvilleBuzz. It was taken on June 12 by a friend of hers, about a mile northeast of the Gillespie Home. Those familiar with Princeton will recognize the area as behind Durr's Pond on Athens road. Got any pictures you’d like to share? Send them to CvilleBuzz.com. … [Read more...]
Tee It Up At Ingleside
I suppose I have driven by Ingleside Golf Course on Rt. 11 near Staunton a couple hundred times, always admiring the hilly layout. Last week, I finally played the mountain course and I will be back. Ingleside has been on a campaign to lure golfers from across the mountain and had advertised an $82 foursome special if you made the trip over to the Valley. My golfing amigos and I had booked one … [Read more...]
University Tire
It’s so rare to have quality experience with a business these days, it’s worth a shout out when it actually happens. I had such an experience this week when I bought tires from University Tire in Charlottesville. For the past few months I have been agonizing about whether or not to relegate my 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee to the junkyard, or play Russian roulette and buy another used car. My Jeep … [Read more...]
Eating TV Dinners
In 1954, the Swanson Food Company changed the way Americans ate their meals. Prior to that date, families gathered around the kitchen table for lunch or breakfast, or around the dining room table for dinner or supper. Sometimes the radio was on, but never during a dinner or formal meal. But with the introduction of Swanson’s frozen meals, appropriately called TV Dinners, families gathered in the … [Read more...]
Rachel Ray’s Meat Loaf Pan
Meat loaf is a staple in our house. It cooks quickly, in about an hour and a half, so we can throw it in the oven after work and still eat by seven. The dish is economical and the leftovers make dynamite sandwiches. Only one problem with meat loaf – grease. No matter how lean the beef, you always have fat sitting in the bottom of your pan, which you must pour off at some point, but there is … [Read more...]
Bubba’s In Virginia Beach
I was in Virginia Beach, headed out for a night fishing expedition beneath the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. My guide said we could cast to breaking stripers beneath the lights of the bridge and they would hit flies. On our way out of Lynnhaven Inlet, we docked our boat at a restaurant right on the water. I had a trout sandwich and it was the best fish sandwich I’ve ever eaten. We sat on the porch … [Read more...]
Coneflowers
My wife Nancy has spent a lot of time working in our yard and it really shows. She has watered and weeded regularly and keeps things trim with edgers and weed eaters. Throughout the yard, her flowers and shrubs are lovely. But the ones I believe both of us are proudest of are the wildflowers she planted around our birdbath. They were perennials and are flowers like you would typically find in a … [Read more...]
A Gray Area on the Eastern Shore
There’s a lot of gray going on at the Eastern Shore. Not gray skies - gray trout. Brent and Angelin Ham from Greensboro are enjoying some dynamite trout action while vacationing this week at Cherrystone Campground in Cheriton. Breaking in a new 17’9” center console, the Ham family is catching lots of gray trout up to 16-inches, plus whiting, croakers, puppy drum, spot and sea bass. High tide … [Read more...]
