If you’re lucky, by Christmas Eve, all your Christmas shopping will be complete and your presents will be wrapped and tucked safely beneath the tree. Interestingly, the weather looks like it might be halfway decent on Christmas Eve so why not tee it up at a local tournament? Ingleside Golf Course in Staunton invites one and all to join the fun at their Annual Christmas Bowl Golf Fest. And who … [Read more...]
The Crow and the Woodpeckers
You can see some amazing and some puzzling things in your own backyard. Case in point. Yesterday I was peering out of my kitchen window, watching the birds at my main feeder, and scarcely 20 feet away I saw a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers. Among my favorite birds, we have had Pileated Woodpeckers nest in the hollow cavity of our 50 year old trees on at least two occasions, and because of our … [Read more...]

As Christmas Changes
By Charles Conway Crenshaw We are approaching Christmas 2016. The Christmas season changes as our age changes. Remember back to childhood? My earlier years during World War II were spent on my grandparent’s farm in Earlysville. With no television and no radio, Christmas was not commercialized. I was thankful for anything I received. Since there was no electricity, … [Read more...]
Rockfish Season Winding Down
With less than 2 weeks to go in the season, the rockfish – big rockfish – are coming to net. Most, says Dr. Ken Neill, III, are coming from the mid-bay area in the vicinity of the Cut Channel, Range Tower, Buoys 40A to 54A. Keeper-sized fish are being caught everywhere with both the York and James producing. Large schools of small rockfish can be found under working birds throughout the bay. … [Read more...]
In The Christmas Spirit
It was a typical main street in a small town in the 1950s. There were two drug stores, a hardware store, a sports shop, a record store, a jewelry shop, a men’s shop, a ladies shop, a shoe store, a small department store and a five and dime on Washington Street in Lewisburg, WV. On that one street, there was every venue necessary for a 12 year old boy to go Christmas shopping. I had waited until … [Read more...]
Super Size Rockfish
By Dr. Julie Ball Ushered in by a sobering cold front, there is no denying that winter has arrived in Virginia. On gusty days paired with plummeting temperatures, it makes getting out on the water a challenge. Although the weather may be frightful some days, most anglers are not complaining since it seems their holiday wishes for a good rockfish season may become a reality this year and just … [Read more...]
Brrrr!!!
Kerr Reservoir Bobcats Lake Country Store reports: Even with water temperatures in the mid 40’s to 50s, bass fishing has been good. Reports of good numbers of fish and 5 fish bags from 14 to 19 pounds have been coming … [Read more...]
News From Louisiana
By Capt. Alan Cain I have been in Louisiana the last few months, and here is a quick report on the fishing. Just like the North Carolina fishery, it has been an up and down season with some tough days due to weather. But overall, we have been getting shots at and catching giant redfish almost everyday. This is all shallow water sight-fishing in 1-3 feet of clear water for 15- to … [Read more...]
Layered Enchilada Bake
I came across a Kraft recipe for a Mexican dish that is just plain yummy. I am not a huge fan of TexMex stuff, but this I like – and so do kids. It’s called a Layered Enchilada Bake. It takes about 25 minutes to prepare and cooks in 40 minutes -and it will feed 6 hungry hombres. You’ll need: 2 pounds of lean ground beef 1 large onion chopped 2 cups Thick ‘n Chunky salsa 2 cans black … [Read more...]
