With my little garden filled with new organic matter and thoroughly tilled, thanks to a great birthday present from my kids, it was time to have it tested to make sure it had enough of this and not too much of that. So, for $15 per test, we sent two soil samples to the Virginia Department of Agriculture. A week late, the results arrived. “No lime!” they said, but the soil could use a … [Read more...]
The Finch Capital of the World
If there seems to be a shortage of finches, sparrows, and snowbirds in your yard, it’s because they are all over at our house. I counted over 60 assorted house finches, gold finches, snowbirds and sparrows scratching away at the feeders and scattered seeds last week when ice and snow covered the ground. Lots of birds fly to the feeders but many of the little birds enjoy finding seeds on the … [Read more...]
Old Businesses of Charlottesville
Rose’s and the Crawling Derby Rose’s was one of the first Five and Dimes, originally called Rose’s 5c 10c 15c. It began in tiny little Henderson, NC in 1915. At the start of WWII, Rose’s had 118 stores. Charlottesville opened its first store at the Barrack’s Road Shopping Center, and all was well until the arrival of Walmart. Then it was arrivederci and last week Rose’s announced it would … [Read more...]
Ground Beef Trays: Absolutely Reusable
I had just dumped 2 ½ pounds of Aldi’s ground beef from the tray into the frying pan. I started to toss the tray in the trash, but I just couldn’t. The tray was as solid as any piece of Tupperware, and it still had many uses. So, I washed it and later used it as a container for a Pea Salad I was making for the family I cook for. They could toss it if they wished, but at least I had salvaged a … [Read more...]
Raising Cane’s
There are Chicken Fingers and then there are Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, and the two are miles apart. Raising Cane’s Chicken is in such demand that traffic comes to a standstill at 5 pm on Rt. 29 as folks wait in line to pull into the parking lot at Cane’s and place their orders. Fortunately, Cane’s has since opened two lanes and there is much less congestion for their … [Read more...]

Hybrid Stripers at Anna
For the past several years, the Game Department has been stocking hybrid striper fingerlings at Lake Anna. Sometimes these experiments work and sometimes not, but in this case, it worked. Anglers are catching not only stripers, but the hybrids, even in this frigid weather. Hybrids to 14 pounds have come to the scales. Hybrid stripers are known for their fighting ability. They are … [Read more...]
Saturday Morning Cartoons
If it was Saturday morning and you were a kid in the 1950’s, there was only one place to be and one thing to do. Sprawl in the floor in front of a big, console TV and watch cartoons. And did we ever. Our first stop was the kitchen where we fetched a bowl and spoon, a box of cereal and a quart of milk and we were ready for action. The entertainment came in waves. Mighty Mouse, Tom and Jerry, … [Read more...]
Green Giant: Simply Steam Frozen Vegetables
I saw them at Food Lion while I was stocking up with some frozen vegetables. They were 8-oz. boxes of Green Giant: Simply Steam vegetables and they were just a dollar a box. They looked just about right size for the two of us and they had some really interesting choices. I picked up a couple boxes, we wolfed them down and I was sold. They were delicious, economical and the ideal size for just … [Read more...]
Robins in a Holly Tree
Our neighbor has a huge holly tree (bush). It must be 40 feet high. Yesterday, I saw a large flock of birds descend on the tree. There were dozens and dozens of robins pecking at the berries. I guess the poor fellows had nothing else to eat and when all else fails, birds will eat holly berries. I have seen flocks of cedar waxwings dive-bomb holly trees and bushes, but not robins. Holly … [Read more...]
