I played golf 4 times at Lake Norman last week. Two days were stifling hot and two days were glorious. I hit a few good shots and I hit lots of bad ones. My family reunion team ended up losing to “Darth” Mathera (my brother-in-law) and his gang by 5 strokes, but the next day, I beat Darth by one stroke in a head-to-head match at Trump National, so good sometimes overcomes evil. But while I was … [Read more...]
The Doormats Have Arrived
Doormat flounder have arrived in the lower Bay. Large flounder are also being caught around seaside wrecks. Remember when fishing for flounder, the general rule is large baits attract large fish. The coastal wrecks are holding sea bass and triggerfish. Spadefish and sheepshead are holding on structure. The spadefish can be spotted around buoys, over wrecks or near the tower. They like fresh … [Read more...]
Catfish Time at Lake Orange
Catfish don’t mind a little hot weather. Sometimes they feed later in the day or into the evenings, but feed they do, especially at Lake Orange. Lake Orange is owned by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, which annually stocks the 130 acre impoundment with catchable size channel cats. The limit is 8 per day and some anglers have been known to catch quick limits at first … [Read more...]
Turn the Radio On
(Continuing the series on growing up in Lewisburg in the 1950s, a great small town and a great time to be young) In the early 1950s, television was on the rise at the expense of the radio. Then, in 1954, Texas Instruments introduced the prototype of the transistor radio. It was a game changer. Young people were no longer attached to a tube radio, which had to be plugged in. They could … [Read more...]
Backyard Chases
I saw a male bluebird chasing a chipmunk this morning. There’s a first for everything, but my backyard has been filled with high speed chases for the last two months. The first chase involved yours truly, when I sprinted after a hawk that had dive bombed my bluebirds. I don’t sprint well, by the way, and almost fell flat on my face. That would have been ugly. The bluebirds chase most anything … [Read more...]
Tavern On The Rail
People will be out and about this week, the Fourth of July, and many will visit Lake Anna. Sherman Shifflett of Louisa, suggests that if you happen through Mineral on the way to or from Anna, and you’re hungry, give Tavern on the Rail a try. Tavern on the Rail, located about ten miles northeast of Mineral and not far from the power plant, is a nuclear option for dining out. Says Sherman, “Ava … [Read more...]
A Tune Up With Gretchen
My Annual Family Golf Tournament, The Granny Classic, is this week. For all my brothers, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, this is the equivalent of the U.S. Open. Problem is, heading into this momentous occasion, my driving in recent outings has ranged from “Barely decent” to “What the …. kind of shot was that?” Usually, the latter. My brothers, Pat and Charlie, are pretty good … [Read more...]
There’s An App For That
I saw on TV last week that someone had developed an app for I-phones to remind forgetful parents that they had a baby in the back seat and not to forget and go to work and leave the infant there in a hot car with the windows rolled up. I’m not making this up. And I have an app for those parents. Use your brain. Anybody who can’t remember they are hauling an infant around should be removed … [Read more...]
The Perfect BLT
There is nothing on earth as good as a BLT and the Perfect BLT begins with a fresh tomato picked off the vine in your own garden. Last night, Nancy went to her little garden pots on the patio and hand selected the first plump, ripe, cherry-red tomatoes of the season. This is like Opening Day for a baseball fan, and pushing December 25 in rank of days of importance. I absolute love BLT’s and the … [Read more...]
Flatfish Bite Improving
Flounder activity in Virginia waters is improving, and some nice fish have been caught on inshore and ocean wrecks. There has also been an upswing in flounder catches at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, but the wrecks have been much more consistent. Sea bass are also on coastal wrecks. Sheepshead and spadefish are around structures like the CBBT, the tower and buoys. Fresh clams are … [Read more...]
