Shad fishermen! Now’s the time. The shad have arrived and fly anglers and spin fishermen are taking lots of hickory shad at the Route 1 Bridge. Herring and white perch are in the river in force. Catfish are taking cut bait, fished on the bottom, in the outside bends of the main river channel. Bass are taking shad-colored crankbaits along the South bank of the river and plastic worms and … [Read more...]
Flounder on the Way!
Flounder reports are starting to roll in from Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Look for the big flatfish to start showing up in the bay very soon. A few red drum have also been caught on the Eastern Shore. Some puppy drum and speckled trout have been reported inside Rudee and Lynnhaven inlets, so things are looking up. Tautog catches are picking up at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and on other … [Read more...]
Historic Lewisburg
(This is the second in a series of growing up in Lewisburg, West Virginia, perhaps the greatest town and in the best time to grow up that a young man could ever ask for.) I had been uprooted at the tender age of 11 from my hometown of Beckley, WV to a place called Lewisburg, historic Lewisburg, they said. I couldn’t have cared less about the history part, all I knew is that my best … [Read more...]
Record Tuna Fish
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries has certified a new state record bluefin tuna. Retired Army General Scott Chambers of Townsend, Delaware, reeled in the 877-pound fish on March 17 after fighting with the fish for 2 ½ hours off Oregon Inlet. The big bluefin measured 113 inches curved fork length (tracing the contour of the body from the tip of the nose to the fork in the tail) and … [Read more...]
Sam’s Hot Dogs
I found myself in Downtown Waynesboro recently around lunchtime. How convenient. Any excuse will do when it comes to getting a couple of hot dogs from Sam’s Hot Dogs in Waynesboro. In my humble opinion, there are three places that stand out when it comes to great hot dogs – Jack ‘N Jill in Charlottesville Jim’s Drive In (Lewisburg, WV) and Sam’s in Waynesboro. All good, but none are better than … [Read more...]
Fluker Farms Mealworms
Currently, I am providing mealworms for two bird families. My old friends, the bluebird couple from last year, have reclaimed their bluebird house on the fence. The eggs have been laid and the hen is on the nest. There is also a pair of cardinals that got in on the mealworm action last summer. They know my habits and me personally and when I go out to drop a handful of mealies in the bluebird food … [Read more...]
Creamy Horseradish Sauce
Often, the right sauce is the perfect compliment to the meat entrée. Such is the case with filet mignon, or beef tenderloin. Since a beef tenderloin is the leanest of the prime steak cuts, and lacks fat, which gives beef its flavor, a good sauce can make this tender cut of beef come alive. Recently we enjoyed cooking a tenderloin for guests and I came up with a simple sauce that was, I believe, … [Read more...]
Mastering the Pitch Shot
It’s a long Par 4 and the average golfer finds his or her ball 40 yards from the pin. The golfer who has mastered the pitch shot will settle the ball on the green, and then take two putts for a 5 - on the way to a round in the high 80’s or low 90’s. But for the golfer whose pitch shots ricochet around the course like a wayward pinball, a different outcome may be experienced. Using too much wrist, … [Read more...]
Attract and Support Birds with Native Plants
(Field Sparrow carrying an insect to its young. Photo by Ken Mattison). By The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Watching birds eat from your bird feeder can be a true joy, but did you know that you could take your bird feeding and bird watching to the next level by growing native plants? Native plants will attract birds and support them by providing them the natural … [Read more...]
Charlottesville Power Equipment
I have an electric chainsaw because I never could get a gas saw to work when I needed it. With an electric saw, if your extension cord is long enough, just plug it in, squeeze the trigger and you can whack away. Last week a big pine limb dislodged and actually stuck vertically in the ground. My wife Nancy dictated that the branch be sawed and removed, which is fine, except the chain came off … [Read more...]
