Picnic hams were a Sunday dinner staple when I was a boy. How well I remember coming home from church to a home filled with the aroma of picnic ham in the oven. I loved picnic hams, and I dearly loved the leftovers as sandwiches. Picnichams, however, have lost favor with American cooks and shoppers. Rather than picnics, it’s Boston butts, whole pork tenderloins or … [Read more...]
Mardi Gras in Charlottesville
Mardi Gras Day is coming soon, this year on March 4. Hey, let’s head for Bourbon Street and the French Quarter in New Orleans and celebrate. No? Then maybe we can celebrate here in Charlottesville with a visit to Roux Street Café in the Woodbrook Shopping Center. The new restaurant serves authentic Cajun Cuisine made to satisfy spice lovers everywhere with entrees like Cheesy Etouffee, … [Read more...]
Colorful Lighting Designs for 2025
By Nancy B Lighting designers are really thinking outside the box this year. Crystorama, one of our vendors is offering chandeliers, pendants, flush mounts, and sconces in two tone finishes and they are beautiful. The Esme chandelier is hand-blown art glass and shaped like delicate flower petals. So whimsical and glowing with warmth. This chandelier stands out in any … [Read more...]
A Grackle Strategy
I saw one yesterday. A grackle. The first of the year, but there will be more to come. Down in Atlanta they are thick as thieves and my son Jimmie has declared war on the thieving birds as they come in hordes and devour his birdseed. Unless you stop filling your birdfeeders, the grackles will come, but as I advised Jimmie, there is a way to ease … [Read more...]
Muddy Waters
The snow melt has caused the James to rise 5 feet. Lakes are also experiencing muddy waters, but that hasn’t stopped the bass bite at Anna and Smith Mountain. Another 30-pound bag won a recent bass tournament which included a whopping 10-pounder. Smith Mountain tourneys are yielding 25-pound bags for 5 bass. Buggs Island is stained but giving up some nice stripers down lake. Crappie … [Read more...]
Big Money in Babysitting
There weren’t many ways to earn money as a Boomer teenager. Allowances were meager, maybe 50c a week. This was before child labor laws, where kids were required to do things like mow the lawn, load dishwashers, tend to younger brothers and sisters and help weed the garden for a lousy 50 cents a week. Summer offered some respite with a few lawn-mowing gigs, but there was often intense competition … [Read more...]
Saturday Night Live: When It Was Funny
Saturday Night Live made its debut in 50 years ago in 1975, and it was funny. Even though it didn’t start until 11:30 on a Saturday night, we stayed up to watch it. Often, we would get together with our close friends and neighbors, Donald and Janice Ramirez, settle in with popcorn and snacks and roar at the hilarious skits served up by the likes of Chevy Chase, Jane Curtain, Gilda Radner, John … [Read more...]
All Aboard!
For a Valentine’s celebration this year, Nancy bought us two tickets to the Virginia Scenic Railway in Staunton. It was a delightful experience We made the 45-minute drive to Downtown Staunton and huddled in the small station room beside the tracks, making friends with the 24 or so other people who would travel with us on our three-hour tour. At exactly 10:30 AM, the Virginia Scenic Railway … [Read more...]
My Pet Rabbit
We have rabbits in our yard from time to time. We mostly see them in the spring and summer. They were once frequent visitors to my garden, but a tight mesh fence now keeps them at bay. However, in the last few weeks I have seen one rabbit almost daily, munching along where I have scattered seeds for the birds. I have recently been tossing out scoopfuls of No Waste bird seed which includes … [Read more...]
Evan Williams 1783 Small Batch
I have always liked Evan Williams Bourbon. I think it is among the best of the bottom shelf bourbons. A couple months back, I was trying to decide whether to pick up one of the lower priced bourbons that I enjoy (Ancient Age, Virginia Gentleman, Evan Williams, etc.) or splurge and go for Makers Mark, Bulleit, Woodford or maybe Buffalo Trace. I saw that Evan Williams 1783 Small Batch was on … [Read more...]
