My wife Nancy likes to screw around with the tree frogs in our backyard. I better explain. We have a small army of tree frogs among the aging branches of the white maple trees in our yard, and the miniscule amphibians love to sing. Beginning in early spring and into the summer, they puff up their throats and carry on as a mighty chorus. One starts singing, and then they all join in. It … [Read more...]
A Dear, Deer Story
By Elaine Callaghan “Déjà vu all over again!” Yogi Berra had something there. Our mama deer of spring 2017 showed up again in the woods in our side yard, tummy bulging with expectation. Last year’s little one went out into the brave new world at about one month old, still full of spots, but needing to get out of our fenced yard because Lucy the Grand Dog was coming to spend a … [Read more...]

The Lonely Squash Plant
In early spring, I get antsy about growing things. For the past few years, while working and typing articles at my Lights Out office in Ruckersville, I have been starting seeds in small Jiffy pots. I put them in the bathroom window with lots of afternoon sun. Later, I transplant them to my garden in the back yard, sometimes with success, sometimes not. This past spring, I started some yellow … [Read more...]

Lots of Spanish mackerel and taylor bluefish are feeding in Chesapeake Bay tidal rips near the Chesapeake Bay … [Read more...]
James River Should be Good To Go
Early week rains have subsided and the James River should be both fishable and productive this weekend. The water level at Bent Creek was 4.17 on Thursday and dropping. The flow was 3.86 thousand cubic feet per second, a little rapid but fishable. With slightly stained water, crankbaits, buzz baits and spinnerbaits should be productive. Splashy topwater offerings should also trigger strikes. … [Read more...]
Got Milk?
Memories of growing up in Lewisburg, WV, a great town and a great time to be young We moved to Lewisburg in the spring of 1955. There were several necessary steps when moving to a new location – turning on the electricity, notifying the water company, installing a new telephone and contacting the milkman to get on his route. In those days, milk was available at grocery stores, but … [Read more...]

Empty Nesters
This was a strange year for bluebird watching. My resident pair picked out their house early and she was on the nest the first week of April. After the given two-week warming-the-eggs time and the two-week feeding-the-babies time, the young ones fledged. Young one, actually. Only one baby made it. Then, in less than two weeks she was on the nest again, and we waited and waited and nothing. She … [Read more...]
