Boomers were raised on Kool-Aid. We drank gallons and gallons of the sugary liquid, which is why most of us now have more fillings in our mouths than white teeth. But having a pack or two of Kool-Aid in the pantry was an inexpensive and convenient way for Moms to be able to serve kids and neighbors a cold drink in the summer, and best of all, the kids loved to make it. There was an art to … [Read more...]
Steam ‘em or Go Home
One of my least favorite thing to do in the kitchen is to boil and peel eggs. It’s no big deal if you’re going to chop up the eggs for egg salad, though those chiseled yellow and white blobs are a little grotesque. But if you’re trying to do deviled eggs that need to appear presentable, that can be tough. I have heard dozens of secret tricks to make sure hard-boiled eggs come out more or less … [Read more...]
The Stingray
Is it too cold to fish? It’s never too cold to fish. Even if the water freezes over, just cut a hole in the ice. But if you’re crazy enough (about fishing) to brave the cold, what is a good way to catch some fish? Capt, Steve Chaconas says to go for The Stingray. Stingray as in Mann’s Classic Stingray Grub. Here’s how, says Capt. Chaconas. “One of my favorite baits for cold water is … [Read more...]
Duckin’ Out
Lots of water is good for ducks and waterfowl, right? Yes, but too much of a good thing is bad for duck hunters. My water-fowling friends have been having poor luck this season because the birds aren’t flying in to their usual ponds. They have lots of new places that are wet, further back in the woods and that’s where they are going. It’s no better on the rivers and stream. Again, too much … [Read more...]
Strawberry Cake
As a “Wanna Be” chef, I have one guiding principal. “If it ain’t easy, don’t cook it!” There are too many good, simple dishes to cook without slaving away for hours to get the job done. Especially when it comes to desserts. Below is one of my go-to desserts that is easy and delicious. I extracted it from my wife’s, Nancy, cookbook. It’s a Strawberry Cake – great for company or pot luck … [Read more...]
Beautiful Backyard Visitors
I hadn’t smoked a cigar since way back before Christmas. It’s been too cold, too wet or too snowy to go outside for a few puffs. Attempting to smoke one inside would be a death wish. My wife Nancy doesn’t even like it when I have unlit stogies in the house. So early this week on a balmy, overcast afternoon, I went out in the backyard and lit one up. Almost always when I’m outside and very … [Read more...]
Lumpkin’s For Breakfast
Lumpkin’s Family Restaurant. It’s where the folks in Scottsville gather. Downhome cooking, friendly service and the best breakfast this side of Tip Top in Charlottesville. If you’ve ever passed through the little river city of Scottsville, you’ve seen that huge rooster out in Lumpkin’s parking lot. Inside, the food is superb. Years ago, I fished in some bass tournaments and we often found … [Read more...]
Sea Bass Season Established
There is not a lot going on in saltwater, fishing-wise, but the black sea bass regs have been set for 2019. Opinions vary on the status of bass numbers, largely due to a lack of data. The new regs will bring in more data to help determine future seasons and creel limits. Dr. Ken Neill, III, reports on these changes: At this month’s VMRC meeting a February recreational sea bass season was … [Read more...]
Lovely Weather for A Sleigh Ride Together
We had a snow last week. It wasn’t much of a snow, at least by West Virginia standards, but it was enough to close the schools and send kids outdoors to sleigh ride. Watching the dozen or so children sleigh riding behind my house brought back some great memories. Our back yard, the school yard actually, has a gentle hill. It drops maybe 30 feet over a 25 yards distance, and then kids … [Read more...]
A Creasy Greens PhD
I feel like I have a PhD in Creasy Greens. A couple weeks back, I did a piece on some Creasy Greens that I had planted from seed last spring. They didn’t sprout until late last fall, but now I have a nice patch. I wasn’t sure how to harvest, when to harvest or how to cook them, but I received lots of advice and information from my CvilleBuzz readers. My cousin, Estelle Hill from Clemmons, … [Read more...]
