Stan Cobb at Greentop reports that crappie fishing has been very good this week. Numerous 2-plus pound fish have been weighed in at Sturgeon Creek Marina at Lake Anna. At least one 3-pounder was weighed in at Bobcat’s, caught from Kerr Lake. The stripers are very active at Anna and Kerr, as they are performing their spawning rituals. Bass are spawning just about everywhere, especially … [Read more...]
How to Catch a Flounder
By Dr. Ken Neill, III Flounder are among the most sought-after fish in our waters. They are great to eat and fun to catch. In Virginia, it is primarily an April through November fishery though some are caught in March and December. Early season action is found in the seaside inlets of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Wachapreague has a world-class fishery that peaks from April through … [Read more...]
You (Haven’t) Got Mail
Last Saturday morning, and for no apparent reason, I could neither send nor receive E-mails. No problem for this Boomer-type computer whiz. I did what all good Geeks do. I turned the computer off and rebooted (that means turning it off and starting again for those out there who are not computer whizzes). Still, no E-mails. Hmmmm! Alright, now for the serious stuff. I “Force Quit” … [Read more...]
Morel Time
I had never eaten a morel until my old friend Carl Oakes asked if I wanted a few. Not wanting to offend, I said, “Sure”, but I had no idea what they were or what to do with the strange looking spores. Later I found out that morels, wild mushrooms, were mountain delicacies and highly desirable. On several occasions since then, I have taken to the hills and picked them myself. … [Read more...]
Made in the Shade
“Made in the shade” was an expression from the 1950’s when the “cool cats” were cruising the drive-ins, combing their ducktails and listening to rock and roll on the juke box. You still hear this phrase from time to time, but usually from those 50 and older. Made in the shade is also a gardening term, but mostly it’s “not made in the shade.” Very little seems to grow in shady areas, … [Read more...]
Easy Pumpkin Muffins
If I ever wrote a cookbook, it would be called “The Lazy Cook” because I am a great fan of easy recipes. Pumpkin muffins can be complicated to put together, but not my recipe. It’s about as easy as it gets, and the muffins are both healthy and delicious. This recipe may appear to be too easy, and it is. I am, after all, a lazy cook. You need five things: a box of yellow cake mix, a can of … [Read more...]
Travinia’s Tenderloin Medallions
Travinia’s Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar has become one of our go-to restaurants when we feel like Italian, an upscale dinner and a cozy atmosphere. Nancy especially likes it when we can eat outside on their patio near the fire pits. Almost always, I order a veal dish or one of their authentic Italian entrees, but recently I felt like I didn’t need all that pasta and ordered the … [Read more...]
Waynesboro Country Club
I had heard that Waynesboro Country Club was open to the public and again accepting VSGA Cards and thought that would be a nice venue for a round of golf. But I went to the VSGA booklet and Waynesboro was not listed. There was, however, a flyer that had three additional courses open to VSGA and Waynesboro was included. But the phone number on the flyer was no good, so I went to their … [Read more...]
Striped Bass & Sea Bass News
By Dr, Ken Neill, III At this week’s VMRC meeting, there were a couple of actions directly affecting recreational anglers. The one that will get all the attention is the closure, through emergency action, of Virginia’s Spring Trophy Striped Bass seasons. There actually are three, though we think of them as one - bay, coastal, and tributaries of the Potomac. They are all closed. As they were … [Read more...]
Blues, Blues and More Blues
At Nags Head, there were good catches of bluefish on the piers on Wednesday and they were biting all day. Angler, Justin Wase, said there were over 200 caught in less than 2 hours at OBX Pier and he caught 30. The same for all the piers. Bluefish like clear water because they sight-feed and the ocean is remaining clear. The piers were catching bluefish again on Thursday morning along with some … [Read more...]
