Salt is pretty cheap. A box of table salt is less than a buck, but Kosher salt? Not so much. A 16-ounce carton of Morton’s Coarse Kosher Salt runs about $2.99, and I go through that stuff like crazy. I season nearly everything I cook with Kosher Salt. On the program, “Chopped”, one of the biggest criticisms for the contestants – and these are all professional chefs – is the lack of seasoning, … [Read more...]
Okra: My Cash Crop
I have often said that a backyard garden is usually not very economical. Once you calculate the cost of the seeds, fertilizer, manure, garden tools, water costs, fencing and various garden gizmos – you’d do better just going to the store or a farmer’s market and buying all your vegetables. The saving grace of a backyard garden is the freshness and the unrivaled taste of a just-picked … [Read more...]
A “Murder” of Crows
Have you ever been “buzzed” by a bird? Like when they swoop down over your head? It’s a weird feeling. One spring I had a new pair of bluebirds nesting and went out to feed them meal worms. Babies had just hatched. As I approached, the male “buzzed” me – swooped down just across the top of my head and clicked his wings together. I left immediately. Later, I was able to convince the … [Read more...]
Fall Trout Stocking Underway
The fall trout stocking season inVirginia is in full effect. Lots of fish are going into the streams and lakes. The main problem is finding enough water to cast too. Boy, do we need a couple days of drenching rain. Despite the cooler weather, fall is a prime time to fish. Don’t miss out on the best time of the year to catch a limit of fish. DGIF biologists stock frequently throughout the season, … [Read more...]
Hand-Me-Downs
Not many Boomers were able to avoid the scourge of hand-me-down’s – clothes and shoes passed down from older brothers or sisters, or from one family to another. Most Boomer parents were children of the depression, and recycling was a way of life, not a fashion statement. Moms were even known to cut off buttons from old shirts and coats, so you know they were eager for gently used clothing in good … [Read more...]
Shenandoah Smallmouth
It’s been a great year for smallmouth on the Shenandoah River. Guides with Mossy Creek Fly Shop noted the season began with high, discolored, and cold water and ended with low, clear, hot and perfect conditions. September, they said, was their best float fishing year in history. “Our guides were slammed up every day into October and the fishing conditions couldn’t have been much … [Read more...]
More Foxes
A few weeks back, there was a fox drinking from the birdbath in my front yard at mid-day, and he was covered with mange. We haven’t seen that particular animal since, but just this week, we have seen two more foxes, this time in our back yard, and again, at or near mid-day. One was a grown fox with a full coat, while the other appeared to be a younger animal with a touch of mange. In … [Read more...]
Birds on the Move
Loyal CvilleBuzz reader, Chuck Strauss from Nelson County, sent a recent e-mail about the birds at his feeders, or lack thereof. Said Chuck, “We have noticed a significant drop-off in birds coming to our feeders—both the window feeder, which has black sunflower seeds, and the big feeder which has regular bird seed. We normally see house- and goldfinches, a cardinal pair, chickadees, … [Read more...]
Another Opening Day
By Sherman Shifflett When the alarm clock went off at 4:30 AM Saturday morning, I rolled over and thought, "I'm 77 years old, retired. I don't have to do this anymore." But, oh yes I do. The primal urge to hunt and the call of the wild are strong motivators. So, I "un-assed that cot" as they used to say in the Army. With only four hours of sleep, I was dragging. I attended the … [Read more...]
