We packed a lot of action in our two day layover in Maui. We had not booked any of the cruise excursions because we didn’t know how long it would take us to recover from our trip. So about mid-morning the first day, we ventured from the ship and found a bus called Hula Hopper run by a few locals. We signed up for a tour on both days and truly got our money’s worth. Our first stop … [Read more...]
High Over Hilo
I was a little edgy the last time I boarded a helicopter. It was a chopper in Kauai on our last cruise. But this time I was excited to hop into the 6-passenger aircraft. The most spectacular views of Hawaii, I have discovered, come from the air. Our pilot spun us around and headed for the lava fields. We were in Hilo on the east side of the Big Island of Hawaii, the site of the 2018 … [Read more...]
Swimming With The Fishes
Nancy and I were having breakfast in the cafe, with the ship docked just off the coast of Kona. About 500 yards from the ship, I saw a school of tuna chasing baitfish off the port side. It was hard to judge, but they appeared to be 30 or 40 pound yellowfin tuna. While a tuna will eat a ten pound bluefish, a whale will eat a 50 pound tuna like we would munch on a pretzel. I has hoped … [Read more...]
Kauai: Primitive Splendor
As we approached the island on Thursday morning, we were greeted with jutting cliffs, a full palette of emerald green and angry shorelines of black and rust. I fully expected to see a dinosaur feeding in a grove of bamboo. This is Kauai, a place of extreme beauty and primitive splendor. This is the island movie producers chose to film Jurassic Park, South Pacific and Raiders of the Lost Ark. For … [Read more...]
Plan A Trip
If you’ve never been to Hawaii, you simply must put this trip at the very top of your bucket list. With two island cruises behind me, there is no other place I’d rather go. And if you are fortunate enough to visit the islands, which would you choose? The elegant beaches of Waikiki on Oahu? The sea turtles and rain forests of Maui? The black sandy beaches and botanical gardens of the … [Read more...]
Hawaii Bound
When you get this week’s edition of CvilleBuzz, Nancy and I will be headed for Hawaii. Yep, we’re going again. Hawaii is like an addictive drug in that once you’ve been, you’re immediately planning another trip. On this earth, there is no beauty to rival the islands of Hawaii, and we’ll be visiting most all the islands. We are taking the same Norwegian Cruise Lines Pride of America … [Read more...]
The Apartment
February 1, 1967 was an exciting day. I had packed my Camaro convertible with a few pots and pans, some linens, my guitar and stereo and headed to Charlottesville, my new home. It was a beautiful day, in the low 80’s and I put the top down on my drive over. This Virginia is a special kind of place, I thought. Two weeks later it snowed 16-inches, but on that first day of February, all was … [Read more...]
Whitey The Goldfish
Most goldfish, I suppose, are gold. That’s how they got their names, but we have a goldfish who apparently wasn’t happy with his birth-color and has decided to turn white. We call him (ta-dah) Whitey. Whitey and his seven friends are rescue goldfish. Let me explain. About three years ago, I went on an early spring crappie fishing trip to Lake Orange and stopped at a bait shop … [Read more...]
Delicious Turkey Tenderloin
I don’t know why I bought a turkey tenderloin. I had no earthly idea how I would fix it, but it looked good, I knew it was healthy and it was under ten bucks, so I bought it. Maybe I should say “them” because there are always two turkey loins to a pack. You don’t often see turkey tenderloins in the grocery stores - those cuts from the bottom of a turkey breast – the tender part of … [Read more...]
Affresh for Ceramic Stove Tops
Ceramic stove tops don’t like it when you tip over a glass bottle of olive oil on the edge of the stove top. They crack right down the middle and you have to buy a new stovetop. Happened to me a few weeks ago and now I keep a plastic bottle of olive oil handy – not glass. When Doug’s Maytag delivered my new ceramic stove top. I asked about cleaning, as this has been a genuine pain, … [Read more...]
