Large rockfish are moving out of bay tributaries and into the Bay. Look for them on the Eastern side of the Bay. Anglers are drifting or slow trolling eels near the Plantation Light and along Cape Charles. Mann’s Stretch 25’s and tandem rigs are also effective. School-sized rockfish are available for anglers casting along the bridge pilings and the artificial islands of the … [Read more...]
“They’re Grrrrrreat!”
I don’t eat a lot of cereal. I’m more of a sausage and egg kinda-guy, but I used to eat a lot of cereal. All Boomer kids did. After all, if you didn’t eat cereal how were you going to get any of those neat prizes? I read that Cracker Jacks recently discontinued putting premiums in their boxes, signaling the end of an era, an era of reaching to the very bottom of a new box of cereal to … [Read more...]
A Cedar Waxwing Visit
We had an unexpected Cedar Waxwing visit over the Thanksgiving holidays. We heard a distinct “thump” at the dining room window, and when my son-in-law, Brent, went out to investigate, he found a small, stunned cedar waxwing under concussion protocol. He held the small fellow in his hand for several minutes until it regained its senses and then flew up to the treetops to connect with his … [Read more...]
Backstrap for the Family
By Sherman Shifflett Sometimes I think that deer have calendars for the different hunting seasons. During bow season, I saw lots of deer where I hunt on a farm near Cuckoo, in Louisa County. Cuckoo Tavern is where Jack Jouett took off to ride a horse 40 some miles to Monticello to warn Jefferson that the British were coming. Because Brother Ed was having some health issues, I spent a … [Read more...]
A Thanksgiving Cactus
Years ago, someone gave us a plant called a Christmas Cactus. It’s called Christmas Cactus because it’s supposed to bloom at Christmas. Our plant didn’t read the instructions. Like clockwork, it blooms at Thanksgiving and this year, the (I’m guessing) 20-year old house plant erupted in beautiful pink and white blooms at exactly the week of Thanksgiving. By December 25, it will return to … [Read more...]
New, Old Fashioned Meat Loaf
There are probably as many recipes for meat loaf as there are kitchens in America. Every family has their favorite. I was particularly fond of my Mom’s meat loaf. She used – among other things – tomato paste and lots of onions in her meatloaf. When we married, Nancy used her Mother’s recipe with lots of catsup. It took a while, but now I’m used to that recipe and enjoy it. Last week, … [Read more...]
Robin Norell for World Travel
A few weeks back I did a piece on Planning a Trip to Hawaii and in it, I highly endorsed Robin Norell, an Accredited Cruise Counselor and Certified Travel Associate. She is extremely professional and thorough. When you travel on a Robin-designed tour, it’s like having her in the suitcase. She handles every detail. But I think I put the wrong contact information in the article. She is … [Read more...]

A Downtown Brown
In the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving and Christmas, a few folks are still finding the time to wade out into a cold stream and cast a fly. John Waller, a guide with South River Fly Shop, did. And look what he caught. A huge Downtown Brown. The South River in Augusta County flows through the very heart of Waynesboro. Through the conservation efforts of Trout Unlimited, the City of … [Read more...]
Martin Luther King Geese
About 25 years ago, I got a call from Neil Selby up in Remington. “Can you be up here about 5 tomorrow morning? We’ve got geese and lots of them.” Neil, a long-time friend, owns Shady Grove Kennels, a hunting preserve. Neil also is a master dog trainer. “Sure,” I replied. “See you at 5 AM.” It happened to be on a Monday in early February and I remembered I had not bought a … [Read more...]
