My backyard birds have me well trained, especially my blue jays. Right after Thanksgiving, I had bought a big bag of seed with lots of peanuts and fruit. Each morning, I would see the jays fly in right after I scattered seeds. When I ran out of that seed, I bought a 40-pound bag at Sam’s Club, the Supreme Mix, the best buy on the market. But this blend has only a few nuts – it’s mostly … [Read more...]
A New Year’s Resolution
I made only one resolution this year and I intend to keep it. This year, I am going to bring my own shopping bags to the grocery store. No more of those infernal plastic bags for me. My granddaughter, Berkley, knowing that I spend more time in grocery stores than Dean Martin did in a bar – gave me three heavy duty bags for Christmas. Last week, with bags in hand, I went to … [Read more...]
A Tragic Helicopter Accident
(Nancy with Paul Matero) The recent helicopter crash in Hawaii really struck home. It was the same chopper and the same pilot and the same tour Nancy and I took just two years ago. The pilot was Paul Matero. We had found him to be super professional, with safety front and center. He had years of experience and trained other chopper pilots in handling bad weather. Paul worked for … [Read more...]
Ham and Cream Cheese Roll Ups
I had bought a ten-pack of huge 10-inch tortillas and only used 4 in a Fajita bake. So now what do I do with the 6 leftover tortillas the size of an old LP? Naturally, I decided to experiment. I bought a tub of spreadable cream cheese and a couple deli packs of thin honey ham. After letting the cream cheese come to room temperature, I spread it evenly over the tortilla, then … [Read more...]
Church Book Cooking
During the life of most every church in America, at some point the ladies of the church gather and print their special recipes in a spiral bound cookbook. I have a number of these and they are among my most treasured books - the old recipe collections from churches of my past. I have a recipe book from the Centenary United Methodist Church in Clemmons, NC. This church was founded in … [Read more...]
Saltwater Update
Not much happening on the saltwater scene. Striper season closed on Dec. 31 in the Chesapeake Bay. It’s catch and release only now, and few are trying. A handful of hardy anglers are trying their luck and fighting the elements offshore over wrecks and a few togs are biting here and there. On the Outer Banks, it’s mostly dogfish sharks and skates – and who wants those? One angler … [Read more...]
Outer Banks Seals
Seals on the Outer Banks? You mean those whiskered critters that bark in circuses? On the Outer Banks? Yep, those seals. Seals, especially young seals, often layover on the Outer Banks during their winter travels. Several dozen have been spotted so far. “Outer Banks Today” offers these tips should you happen upon one. First, give the seal a wide berth of 150 feet or … [Read more...]
A Bucket List for 2020
Well, another year in the rearview window. As we head into 2020 it’s time to put things into perspective – to remember what’s really important in life, things that should take priority. Here is a bucket list of must-do things for the coming year. First and foremost, eat more hot dogs. Hot dogs are nature’s most perfect food. Where else can you bite into a steamed, fresh roll … [Read more...]
Really Easy Swiss Chicken
If you notice in my humble attempts at “Now We’re Cooking” articles, each one has the word “easy” in there someplace. I happen to believe that good food doesn’t have to be difficult to prepare. If it does, I let somebody else do it. I‘m all about easy when it comes to cooking. A dish I fixed the other night satisfies the “easy” requirement. It’s also a good way to squeeze another … [Read more...]
A Crow Fondue
Whenever we amass any stale bread or crackers, we save it, put it beside the door and I take it out for the birds. I try to break the pieces as best I can so the small birds can peck away, but the primary partakers are my three crows. They fly by most every morning to see if there any extra morsels. Crows like the larger pieces of bread, but they don’t eat them whole. Rather, they fly … [Read more...]
