I have caught Golden Trout before, but I have never caught a Golden Catfish. The gentleman pictured above caught two Golden Catfish in Lake Orange within a few minutes of each other. These Golden Catfish are really just albino channel cats. The taste the same, bite the same things, fight just as hard, but they are a beautiful yellowish gold color. I don’t know how any more there may be in … [Read more...]
Huge Redear Sunfish
We were fishing off the dock at High Rock Lake in NC where my daughter and son-in-law have a new home. The wind was blowing and the waves from the jet skis were crashing against the bank, stirring up the mud and the fish were biting. We caught catfish up to 5-pounds, but we also caught some huge redear sunfish, sometimes called shellcrackers. My daughter, Angelin, caught a monster, weighing maybe … [Read more...]

Big Box Stores Recommend Nancy B’s for Lamp Repair
By Nancy B There is a Lowe’s right across the street and a Home Depot to open next month that’s close by as well. I must admit, I love Lowe’s and go there for much of my gardening needs and so appreciate gift certificates my children gift me. Lowe’s has a very kind and knowledgeable employee who manages this garden center and is most helpful, I search her out when I go. What’s interesting is that … [Read more...]
Burger King Crispy Chicken Sandwich
Nancy and I were on our way back from a short vacation on the middle Peninsula. It was lunchtime and we had not packed sandwiches. We decided to pull into the next available food outlet, and it happened to be a Burger King. I have always liked Burger King burgers, but then again, I don’t think I’ve ever met a burger I didn’t like. So, we pulled up to the order stand and both decided, as a change … [Read more...]
A Refreshing Cucumber Salad
When your garden is kicking out 25 and 30 pounds of cucumbers every week, it’s nice to have a few extra recipes. You can eat cucumbers in garden salads, of course. But that’s one cucumber. We also like cucumber, onion, and vinegar salads with lots of salt and pepper – so that’s two more cucumbers. Maybe you can eat one plain cucumber for lunch. That’s four – what about the other four dozen … [Read more...]
The Grass is Greener
Usually, this time of year, my lawn mower takes a well-deserved sabbatical, resting quietly in our garden shed for a few weeks, waiting for the heat to go away and cool autumn air to bring the grass back to life. But not this year. I started mowing in March and I haven’t missed a week since. It’s the perfect storm. Lots of rain and then lots of sun to draw the grass out its hidey hole. To make … [Read more...]
Three’s a Charm
Most often, my resident bluebirds will nest twice, then call it quits. On several occasions, however, they go for a third try as mine did this year. I don’t know why they do this unless they lost one nest or had a poor survival rate with the chicks. I know that two babies were around after the first nest, but the second nest vanished before I could get head count. This year’s pair has been one … [Read more...]
The Beautiful Mahi Mahi
The beauty of a Mahi Mahi (dolphin fish) when it first comes out of the water is breathtaking. But when aas soon as they die, the colors fade. Occasionally, there are reports of Mahi being caught from the piers. Currently, the piers are reporting spot, … [Read more...]
