By Nancy B The LightOvation Dallas Market was so inspiring, interesting, above normal, exciting, current and most worthy of the trip. Several years ago at LightOvation the finish black was introduced and while all of us were ready for a new finish, black was a finish we were unsure of. I think I lacked imagination, trust in the industry and it presented a challenge for me. I’ve been wrong … [Read more...]
Robins Galore
All the robins in North American were in my yard this week. Maybe not all of them, but a bunch. Yet, the week before there were none. What’s the deal? The bird folks say that the American Robin’s spring migration generally follows a line formed by 36-degree average temperatures, and that makes sense because in winter robins need to either eat fruit or to have soft dirt and wet … [Read more...]
Cream Cheese Swirl Brownies
Most of my cooking involves simple, easy recipes. If it’s difficult, I let somebody else do it. For example, I make a lot of brownies, but just plain ol’ brownies. But they’re good. I saw a Betty Crocker recipe recently that inspired me to up my game a little so I decided to try a batch of Cream Cheese Swirl Brownies. They looked great, they tasted great and. … they were easy. Here’s … [Read more...]
Texas Roadhouse Catfish
A busy afternoon schedule sent Nancy and me out to eat on Monday evening. She suggested “The Loud Place” (Texas Roadhouse) and I agreed. I was thinking about one of their burgers. I had one on my first visit there and it was very good. But when I scanned the menu, I saw Fried Catfish. Somehow that sounded right, so I ordered it. Fried Catfish is either really good or really bad. It … [Read more...]
Lenten Rose in Full Bloom
On Feb. 1 our Lenten Rose was in full bloom. What a beautiful, wonderful plant. Several years ago, Nancy was trying to figure out what to do with the root-studded and mostly-shady space beneath our old maple tree in the back yard. She planted a few hostas and they did well, but she wanted some color and could find few colorful plants that could bloom without a lot of sun. My son, Jimmie, who … [Read more...]
Air Fryers: Do They Work?
Emeril Lagasse was on TV on Super Bowl afternoon hawking his new Emeril Lagasse Power AirFryer. He cooked up a bunch of dishes that looked amazing. I have been interested in buying an air fryer. Sam’s Club and others have a number of them for sale. The thought of being able to fry foods (which I love) without all the grease and oil is most appealing. But do they really … [Read more...]
Stripers at Nags Head
The relatively mild winter has kept lots of stripers hanging around in the sounds behind Nags Head. Though the bite is slow, hardy anglers are catching fish in Mann’s Harbor and other parts of the sound. Some very nice speckled trout are also showing. Surf fishing has been hit of miss – mostly miss with a few puppy drum beached in Hatteras. Offshore, the bluefin bite has been very good when … [Read more...]
A Holy Moly Communion
Nancy and I had met Larry Hastings at a Blue Ridge Builders meeting. He was pastor at Park Street Christian Church and invited us to attend. One Sunday we did. I always like to sit near the front, not the back of a church, so on this particular Sunday we went to the front and took a seat on the second pew. As it turns out, the Church was celebrating communion that morning. Our … [Read more...]
Buffalo Wild Wings
About a year ago, Buffalo Wild Wings opened a restaurant on Rt. 29 just around the corner from our house. I have eaten at their stores before but considered them more of a Sports Bar than a serious restaurant. But sometimes Nancy and I get a craving for wings – most often on a Sunday night after a hectic weekend. Our last couple experiences with take-out wings weren’t the … [Read more...]
Dried Meal Worms?
This past week - in the interest of avian science – I conducted an experiment. I soaked a handful of dried meal worms in water (to make them softer), put them on a plate beside my feeder and nothing touched them. Well, I take that back, a curious squirrel had a taste. But no birds. My backyard birds will have nothing to do with dried meal worms. Yet, they sell thousands upon thousands … [Read more...]
