The strawberry invasion is about to begin. Plump red berries from southern California, Mexico and Florida will soon hit the grocery shelves en masse, and one thing is certain. They will put all the beautiful red, ripe berries on top, and the rotten and unripe fruits on the bottom so you can’t see them. Buyer beware. Still, what will we do with this huge influx of strawberries? We … [Read more...]
Seeds-zez
When my oldest daughter, Angelin, was a tiny little thing, she was fascinated with seeds and small objects she found in the grass. As soon as she was outside, she would start gathering things, gripping them tightly in her small hands. We asked what she had and she said, “Seeds-zez” She held them throughout the day and we had to pry them away at bedtime. She loved to collect … [Read more...]
Glorious Jonquils
I have never seen jonquils as lovely as this year. We have several patches in our yard that bloomed early. And they are still blooming. One group (that sometimes blooms and sometimes doesn’t) outdid themselves this spring. The flowers are a rich buttercup yellow with bright orange centers. They are simply glorious as they stretch their fragrant blossoms forward to their source, the … [Read more...]
Spencer’s Sausage: The Best
When we arrived in Nags Head last week, one of my first trips was to Food Lion and the meat department. I was looking for my favorite sausage – Spencer’s – and they had some. Nancy and I ate it every day for breakfast and brought home an extra package. Spencer’s Sausage is made and processed in Eastern NC, in Washington, over near Greenville and East Carolina University. They make … [Read more...]
Not All White Deer Are Albinos
By Bob Duncan, former Executive Director, DGIF Let’s face it, people are fascinated by the unusual or bizarre. One has only to think about Ripley’s Believe It or Not as an example of this fascination with the odd. If you grew up as I did during the era of singing cowboys and the great western movies of that day, you may recall the stories of the mystical white buffalo. There … [Read more...]
Yellow-Finz
Yellowfin Tuna fishing has been excellent out of Oregon Inlet and the Outer Banks. Tenacity and Waste Knot both hit the docks with great catches and limits of Yellowfin Tuna on Wednesday as did a lot of private boats. The skippers at Pirates Cove are fueled up and ready to go, so if you want to get in on the action, give them a call at 252-473-3906, or visit online … [Read more...]

VRBO
V.B.R.O. Vacation rental by owner. We had never used this service before, but from now on, we won’t go anywhere without first checking into this by-owner web site. Our anniversary falls on March 3 and we always like to go somewhere and get out of town, even just for a few days. For our 50th, we hopped aboard a Norwegian Cruise Liner and toured Hawaii, but that wasn’t in the cards … [Read more...]
For the Love of a Dog
They call us franken-steins, weener-meisters, dawg-men. We are lovers of all things hotdogs. We would rather eat a chili dog loaded with mustard, slaw and onions than a Cowboy Ribeye at a Chicago steak house. And our hotdog Mecca is at milepost 4.5 in Kitty Hawk, just north of Nags Head. It’s Capt’n Franks. Capt’n Franks has been on the beach road since Nags Head was a baby. They have … [Read more...]
Ducks and More Ducks
I was on our deck over-looking the ocean just after sunset, enjoying a cigar and a cocktail when I saw them coming. They were headed south, down the beach, a long string of ducks. I tried to calculate their numbers – a hundred here, then another hundred and another. I figured there were close to a thousand ducks headed for who-knows-where. Then, from the same direction, I saw another … [Read more...]
