Last Saturday, Nancy went to a Tomato Seminar with Mark Levisay, hosted by the Corner Store Nursery, and came back with a notepad filled with tips and facts. Mark is a Master Gardener and is known for bountiful crops of tomatoes and peppers. She relayed some of his Tomato Tips to me and here are a few that I remember. Don’t water tomatoes with a hose. Use a sprinkler can and water deeply at the … [Read more...]
Cinco de Mayo Veggie Pie
This is Cinco de Mayo week coming up. Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is a big deal in Mexico, commemorating a great victory in the Battle of Puebla during the Franco/Mexican War in 1862. It is a day of great pride for the Mexican people and a day when Americans eat about 100 million avocados and pretend they know how to cook Mexican food. This includes yours truly. However, slowly but surely, I am … [Read more...]
The Magnificent Iris
I grew up in what could be acknowledged as the Iris Capital of the World - Greenbrier County in West Virginia. Every May, the West Virginia Hills would spring to life with Iris blooms - along roads, bordering driveways, in massive beds and overwhelming the landscape with their beauty. The climate is perfect in this, one of the most beautiful counties in America. Add cool evenings, with warm … [Read more...]
Holland Comes to Virginia
Mark your calendars for the first couple weeks in April 2026. That’s when Holland comes to Virginia. A few weeks back, Nancy said she had a “spring surprise” for me. We hopped in the car and headed for Nokesville, VA. Nokesville? What could possibly be in Nokesville, I wondered? A world of stunning tulips, that’s what. We made a visit to Burnside Farms, which plants 2 million tulip … [Read more...]
Tariff Effects on Residential Lighting
Tariffs are on all our minds of late - a necessary evil, if you will. And this is forcing our lighting vendors and us along with all stores to have to increase prices. Our vendors are now saying prices will increase 20% across the board. A very hard pill to swallow, but I do believe to be short lived. I remind myself to breathe in and breathe out and remain calm. Not an easy thing to do for … [Read more...]
Baa-Baa Black Sheep(shead)
The last few years have been terrific for sheepshead fishing, and this year looks to be more of the same. Some giant sheepshead have already been caught in the lower bay and that action should peak in June. Use fiddler crabs for best results. Inshore wrecks are giving up sheepshead, tautogs and sea bass. Black drum have spread out across the lower bay and some big stripers are being … [Read more...]
A Honeymoon Saved by the Dogs
We were young and in love – and dumb as bricks. Nancy and I got married on March 3 and I decided – out of the blue – that we would go to Miami Beach for our honeymoon. At the time I did not realize that driving to Miami Beach from Charlottesville was the rough equivalent of driving halfway to Sydney, Australia if there was a highway on the Pacific Ocean. So, I took $500 out of my scant … [Read more...]
A Butter Lettuce Salad
I discovered Butter Lettuce at Kroger’s several months back. It’s not sold loose, like head lettuce, romaine, bibb and other lettuces. It usually comes pre-packaged, but I saw a pack not much more than a regular head of lettuce, so I bought it. It is sweet, rich, and delicious and, yes, buttery. This spring as I was buying some young collard plants for my garden, I saw a six pack of small … [Read more...]
Frog Update
I believe I am one of a select few that has daily interactions with frogs. Last winter, we had three frogs. One large one, one small one and one teeny one. Cold weather appeared and the frogs disappeared, sinking as they do when the water cools to the bottom. They simply turn off their engines and hibernate. Early this spring, we had three frogs emerge. The same three, I’m sure. Today, we still … [Read more...]
A Double Good Smash Cheeseburger
“Where do you want to go out to sat,” asked my wife, Nancy, last Saturday “Riverside,” I thundered. I always “thunder” Riverside because I know Nancy would rather go most anyplace else. Then I mentioned a big basket of Riverside French Fries and she said the Onion Rings were better. Then, believe it or not, she said let’s do go to Riverside. Burgers and grill food are a real treat for us … [Read more...]
