“Come see this bird,” Nancy yelled from the kitchen. The last time I put down my paper and coffee to get up and see an alleged bird, it was a leaf, so I was not hopeful. But dutifully, I went to the window and saw a snow white bird among a big flock of grackles. I went outside to investigate. When the grackle flock flew, the white bird went along. It was the same size and had the same … [Read more...]
Made in Spades
Last week started off badly, with everyone stuck at the dock in Virginia’s saltwaters. But after the wind died down, the good fishing continued. Spadefish are abundant and are congregated around buoys, pylons of the CBBT and the Chesapeake Light Tower. Anglers fishing with Aquaman Charters did well with the spades last week and Captain Craig Paige, Paige II Charters, also got in on the … [Read more...]
Watermelons are Mighty, Mighty Fine
Chicken is good. Hambone is sweet. Possum meat is mighty, mighty fine. But give me, oh give me, I really wish you would That watermelon hanging on the vine My Daddy used to sing that song when I was a boy. I don’t know if it was an actual, recorded song, or something he just made up, but he sang it frequently around the house, particularly in summer and particularly … [Read more...]
Lovely and Versatile Coneflowers
Nancy has done some amazing work landscaping our yard. About all I do is mow the grass and sit back and enjoy the lovely flowers and plants, so I take no credit. One of my favorite parts of the yard, though, is a little wildflower patch around our bird bath. There was once ivy there, that took over everything, but Nancy pulled it all up and planted a little patch of perennials that … [Read more...]
An Actual Water Garden
When we installed our small goldfish pond a month back, we had two goals. First, to give our 8 ever-growing goldfish a little more breathing room and second, I wanted a pond for a few frogs. The goldfish are loving life and I now have a dozen bullfrog tadpole sprouting legs. The pond is already a most relaxing place to enjoy a summer evening. But there is another side benefit to our goldfish … [Read more...]
Southern Baked Chicken
No, not southern-fried chicken, southern-baked chicken, but it’s almost as good. A month or so ago, I bought a 4-pack of chicken loins, about a ½ inch thick, five in a pack, from Sam’s. Didn’t know what I’d do with them, but since they would thaw fairly quickly if I needed a last minute entrée, I popped them in the freezer. I took the last package out last night and mulled over my … [Read more...]
Chipmunk Races
I am going to be rich. We’re talking “Buy-a-100-foot-yacht” rich. I suppose I’ll continue doing Cville Buzz, but just for fun. I won’t need any revenue. Rich! I’m going to be really rich. This morning when I went out in the back yard, I saw one chipmunk chasing another chipmunk. Chipmunks are fast as it is, they can haul chipmunk ass. But when one chipmunk is pissed about something and … [Read more...]
Open Concept Requires Correct Lighting
By Nancy B Many clients refer to this terminology of “Open Concept” along with “Open Layout” and “Open Floor Plan”. They all mean the same. It used to be that kitchens were separated from the rest of the house by doors or a pass-through to the dining room. But now having the “open concept”, the kitchen is open to the rest of the entertaining areas and seen from the family room, great room, … [Read more...]
Common Chicory: Uncommon Beauty
Since I noticed a butterfly weed, a brilliant orange plant growing beside the road last year, I have become more and more interested in ordinary weeds and wildflowers we often ignore. One is blooming right now, it’s common chicory, totally considered a weed and in the dandelion family. Chicory, of course, is a name associated with coffees, and this plant can be used as a coffee substitute and … [Read more...]
Lots of Options!
There are certainly plenty of options for Virginia saltwater anglers. Capt. Jake Beck from. Knot Wish'n Charters says, “Summer is here, water temps are cool in the morning and warm to 75 in the afternoon. The Spanish bite is in full effect and lots cobia and red drum are migrating north.” Both cobia and drum are available throughout the lower bay. The cobia action is outstanding. They are … [Read more...]
