I am going to be rich. We’re talking “Buy-a-100-foot-yacht” rich. I suppose I’ll continue doing Cville Buzz, but just for fun. I won’t need any revenue. Rich! I’m going to be really rich. This morning when I went out in the back yard, I saw one chipmunk chasing another chipmunk. Chipmunks are fast as it is, they can haul chipmunk ass. But when one chipmunk is pissed about something and … [Read more...]
Open Concept Requires Correct Lighting
By Nancy B Many clients refer to this terminology of “Open Concept” along with “Open Layout” and “Open Floor Plan”. They all mean the same. It used to be that kitchens were separated from the rest of the house by doors or a pass-through to the dining room. But now having the “open concept”, the kitchen is open to the rest of the entertaining areas and seen from the family room, great room, … [Read more...]
Common Chicory: Uncommon Beauty
Since I noticed a butterfly weed, a brilliant orange plant growing beside the road last year, I have become more and more interested in ordinary weeds and wildflowers we often ignore. One is blooming right now, it’s common chicory, totally considered a weed and in the dandelion family. Chicory, of course, is a name associated with coffees, and this plant can be used as a coffee substitute and … [Read more...]
Lots of Options!
There are certainly plenty of options for Virginia saltwater anglers. Capt. Jake Beck from. Knot Wish'n Charters says, “Summer is here, water temps are cool in the morning and warm to 75 in the afternoon. The Spanish bite is in full effect and lots cobia and red drum are migrating north.” Both cobia and drum are available throughout the lower bay. The cobia action is outstanding. They are … [Read more...]
The Curse of Boat Motors
There are two types of motors. Those that don’t work now and those that soon won’t work. The Johnson’s, Mercury’s, Evinrude’s, Suzuki’s and Yamaha’s of this world are all the work of the devil. When you most need one to function, it doesn’t. Like on a balmy day on the Chesapeake, drifting along for flounder, not a care in the world. You turn the ignition on and the engine fairly purrs. You … [Read more...]
Pond Notes
We are loving our goldfish pond. Every afternoon that it’s decent outside, we go out to the pond, have a cocktail and watch the fish do laps. I’ve been trying to teach them to do tricks, like they do with dolphins, but so far I can’t get them to jump through any hoops. They just do laps around the pond and beg for food. One initial concern we had right after we installed the pond was … [Read more...]
Chicken Salad Croissants
Sometimes if we’re pressed for time and have guests for lunch, I’ll make a run to Sam’s Club, pick up a container of Sycamore Farms Chicken Salad, a couple avocados and a pack of freshly-baked croissants and we’ll have that for a meal. If we’re really pressed, we’ll pick up a carton of their Amish Potato salad and – voila! A fancy, delicious and really easy lunch. I have been really … [Read more...]
Hulu Still Rules
The cable company called me this week and offered free cable TV for a year if I would sign back up. We had dropped the cable about a month or so ago when our bill hit $150 and we didn’t even subscribe to any of the premium channels. “No thanks,” I responded to the cable lady. “We’re happy with Hulu.” Hulu charges us about $50 a month and offers jillions more options than cable. The only … [Read more...]
Return to Bonefish
Finally. I can write an Eating Out column again. We actually went out to dinner for the first time in over two months. We called Bonefish for a reservation. I figured that with all the restaurants reopening, they would be packed and it would be difficult to be seated. But they weren’t, even at limited seating capacity. We watched as more take-out bags were delivered outside than meals to … [Read more...]
Goodbye Grackles
Goodbye and good riddance to the flocks of grackles that have invaded my yard and decimated my feeders since late March. Slowly but surely, their numbers have diminished. Now, there are just a few remaining that pound my sunflower heart feeder and they will soon be gone. Grackles are more of a marsh-oriented bird, but they come inland to breed and nest during April, May and June. Their nesting … [Read more...]
