I made a fun dish this week – Ravioli Lasagna. It turned out well, but how could it not? If you put ground sirloin, pasta sauce, onions, garlic, Italian cheeses and seasonings and ricotta cheese in a casserole dish and then add cheese filled ravioli? Heck yes, it was good. The nice thing about this recipe is you don’t have to fool with the lasagna noodles. I know they make oven-ready lasagna … [Read more...]
Free Band Concerts
Like the commercial for TurboTax says,” It’s free. Free, free, free, free.” And so are the band concerts. Steve Layman, Music Director of the Charlottesville Municipal Band, notes that the band is offering FREE outdoor concerts this spring and summer. Why? The band likes to play music. That’s what bands do and this is a way these talented folks can play again in front of a … [Read more...]
All Aflutter
I saw something this morning I had never seen before – or at least I had never noticed. There was an adult robin in the dogwood tree in the front yard fluttering its wings. I have seen bluebird adults do this to keep in touch and I have often seen baby birds flutter their wings to be fed, but never an adult robin. I believe it was a female trying to attract a male or at least say, … [Read more...]
Trout in the South
There are lots and lots of trout now in the South River in Waynesboro. The state has stocked trout twice so far, and the local chapter of TU has added three more loads – plus, there were plenty of holdovers to start off with. Tommy at South River Fly Shop says the best shot at catching some of these nice fish is with a double nymph rig, but the sulphur hatch should happen any day. The run of … [Read more...]
The Perils of First Grade
Digging deeply into the memories of childhood, this Boomer shudders at the thought of the early years of school, namely kindergarten and first grade. In the 1950’s, there was no pre-kindergarten, in fact, kindergarten was optional. I remember it as a waste of about 5 hours a day. The teacher read silly stories and we spent much of our waking hours (yes, there was nap time) cutting silhouettes … [Read more...]
Gold, Gold and More Gold: Finishes, That Is
By Nancy B I’m sure many of you remember the polished brass and antique brass of years gone by. When I started in the lighting business nearing 40 years ago, polished and antique brass were very popular and almost all traditional homes had brass lighting fixtures. Polished brass is still a beautiful finish but lighting manufacturers stopped supplying it about 12 years ago, but trust … [Read more...]
Louisa County Turkeys
By Sherman Shifflett Opening day of any hunting season is always exciting, and the 2021 spring turkey hunting season was no different. Lloyd Runnett and his son, Robert, both bagged big birds on Saturday, April 10, 2021. I have known the Runnett's since I arrived in Louisa in 1968, and they have always treated me like part of the family. I deer hunt with them, but … [Read more...]
House Guests
I have had two special house guests in the past week. Fly-bys, actually. Birds. Ones I normally don’t see, Last week I had an Eastern Towhee stop by and say hello and then this week, three Cedar Waxwings paid a brief visit. I have been seeing Cedar Waxwings in the last few years, but only passing through. I see them along about now and again in mid-fall. I suppose they migrate through this … [Read more...]
Bonefish Appetizers
We went out to dinner at Bonefish Grill, but instead of ordering a regular dinner with an entrée, we had a dinner of appetizers and they were great. Nancy and I started off with an order of Bang Bang Shrimp – a perfect appetizer and I love the sauce they use and the bed of lettuce beneath. I ate the lettuce as a salad along with my meal. After the Bang Bang Shrimp, we ordered another appetizer – … [Read more...]
Special Boneless Pork Chops
Not long ago I ran across some pork cube steaks. I fried them quickly with some seasoned flour. They were very good and I wanted to buy some more. But cubed pork steaks is not a cut you often run across. I was at Food Lion and they didn’t have any, then I thought maybe I would just get some thin pork loin chops and pound them like a cubed steak. I saw a package that said Boneless Pork … [Read more...]
