My wife Nancy enjoys working in the yard – which has relieved me of many things I definitely do not enjoy. I mow the grass, piddle in the garden, suck up leaves in the fall and that’s about it. Nancy, though, will get out the weed-eater and trim up my work, she has about a hundred pots with flowers, three garden beds and she keeps our goldfish pond in pristine condition. For her, yard work is … [Read more...]
Ground Pork Patties
I enjoy ground pork – not ground sausage, just plain old pork that’s been chopped up. You can use it in lots of recipes, but I enjoy it in patties – like burgers. I bought a pound recently. It’s cheap, like four of five bucks and I figured I would decide later how to cook it. I decided on pork patties, but that night when I looked for the saltines which I use as a filler, we were out. Then I … [Read more...]
Maryland Twerps
We got a bill in the mail yesterday saying we owed the state of Maryland $21.49 for having the audacity to drive on one of their roads. Back in May, we drove to Lancaster County in Pennsylvania to see the play, Noah’s Ark. Our GPS Lady – who is now on double secret probation - suggested a route that took us through most of Northern Virginia, half of D.C. and then through Maryland by way of … [Read more...]
Checking Out the Freezer
It was the summer of 1973 and we had made close friends with Donald and Janice Ramirez from church. We ate at each other’s house, went out to eat together and had kids about the same age. It was destined to be a great friendship. They had even asked us to watch over their house in Woodbrook while they spent a week with family back in New Orleans. “I’d be delighted to feed the fish and the cats … [Read more...]
“Gill Time
At Lake Orange, the bluegills and shellcrackers are biting most anything put in front of them. Popping bugs have been especially effective. Elsewhere, recent rains have cooled Virginia waters, causing the fish to be on the move. Mid-depth docks have been hot spots for bass, crappie, and bluegills. Anna stripers are hitting live bait rigged on down lines. Trolling with deep plugs is also … [Read more...]
Get Ready for Cobia
Cobia are in the bay waters now, but it’s catch and rerease until June 15. By then, the bite should be in full swing as more and more of these sleek warriors enter the bay. Surface schools of both cobia and red drum were spotted along the beach last week. The water temp in Poquoson Flats is 65. When it hits 70, look out. The early run of Spanish mackerel and bluefish fizzled some, but there … [Read more...]
Zelda’s Grocery Store.
In 1955, Lewisburg, WV was a painted city by Norman Rockwell, or could have been. Main Street was pretty much it – three blocks or so with a half dozen businesses per block. There were the usual stores – a five and dime, a barbershop, a bank, a savings and loan, some clothing stores, a jewelry store, two pharmacies, a couple small department stores, a record shop, a doughnut shop, and Zelda’s … [Read more...]
Tomatoes on the Way
My 4 tomato plants are loving life. As per the instructions of Mark Levisay, a Tomato-meister of the first degree, I put a tall stake beside each plant and have been strapping the main vines to the stakes as the plants grew. So far, with plenty of both sun and rain, the plants are amazingly healthy, and I got my first serious tomato a week or so back. The tomato is now approaching the size of a … [Read more...]
A Rose-breasted Grosbeak
We had some unexpected company at our birdfeeder this week. A stunning male Rose-breasted Grosbeak stopped by to sample our sunflower hearts. He came in the morning and returned for another snack that afternoon. I am always super excited when a feathered visitor stops by. I had seen a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak once or twice in the past, and what a beautiful bird - jet black feathers on his … [Read more...]
Calling Mr. Appliance
I was baking a batch of brownies and set the oven at 315. Fifteen minutes later, there was smoke in the kitchen. The oven had fried the brownies – it was a tray of chocolate charcoal. The oven, obviously, was on the blink so we called around, looking for someone who could work on and get parts for an older model GE, and had no luck. Finally, we called a company called Mr. Appliance, offering … [Read more...]
