Covid be damned, we’re going to Hawaii again this November. Gonna take the same Norwegian Cruise with four island stops. There’s still a lot of Hawaii left to see. In the spirit of Hawaii and with nothing else better to do, I decided to try my hand at making a Blue Hawaiian, one of our favorite “fruity drinks” during past cruises. For starters, there is a difference between a Blue Hawaii and … [Read more...]
Yellowfins Await
There are plenty of yellowfin tuna off the Outer Banks, but not many fishermen willing to drop two grand, bundle up and go chase them. But they are out there, some big bluefins, too. In Virginia saltwater, it’s slim pickings. There are some togs and flounder being caught off the wrecks, but few are trying. A handful of anglers are picking up speckled trout at Rudee and Lynnhaven inlets. On … [Read more...]
Shirley Mae Roomba
I suppose we have arrived. We now have a live-in maid. Her name is Shirley Mae. She lives under a desk in our bedroom. She is a Roomba, a robot vacuum cleaner. Nancy got Shirley Mae for Christmas. I wish it had been my idea, but it was my daughter, Angelin, who delivered the goods. Shirley Mae has been a great addition to our home. I don’t know why, but ours is one of dustiest houses in … [Read more...]
Let The Squawking Begin
My backyard birds have me pretty well trained. Now, the crows are getting in on the call-to-action. I have three crows that make regular visits. They enjoy and eat the corn or any stale bread that I scatter. Recently, I bought a 50 pound bag of feeder corn and each morning, I toss out a cup full, which the crows readily eat. I usually make my daily walk to the shed in the back yard where I keep … [Read more...]
Stuffed Chicken Breasts
I saw a recipe for stuffed chicken breasts that looked good. The more ways and the more chicken you can eat, the better off you are heath-wise and weight-wise – at least I am. So I gave this recipe a try and it’s a keeper. Very simple – chicken, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, and panko crumbs. Begin with a large skinless and boneless breast section, then use a sharp knife and cut out a pocket … [Read more...]
P.F. Chang for Great Chinese Food
I’m not much on buying prepared foods at the grocery store. They are usually overly expensive and not very tasty – gross, sometimes. But every now and then, when you don’t have time to cook or run to the store, it’s nice to have something in the freezer to pop in the oven – and hopefully it’s not gross. For some reason, I was in that section at the grocery store and saw a package of Chinese … [Read more...]
Peanut Butter Pie
Sounds sorta’ goofy, doesn’t it? But let me tell you something. Peanut Butter Pie is unbelievably good. The recipe is in a cookbook Nancy gave me for Christmas – “The Happy in a Hurry Cookbook” by Steve and Kathy Doocy. Steve is the longtime morning host of Fox & Friends. He is a laid back, family kind-of-guy who happens to love to cook. Nancy saw him prepare a few of his recipes, live on Fox … [Read more...]
Finger Licking Good
It was a typical Sunday night for the Brewers. We couldn’t decide whether to eat leftovers, toss some burgers on the grill or maybe order a pizza. That’s when Nancy said, “How about fried chicken? That’s not fair. If anybody ever mentions fried chicken during a conversation about food, all bets are off. Nothing, absolutely nothing will ever be able satisfy an appetite after “fried chicken” comes … [Read more...]
Two Left Feet
The last time my son Jimmie was in town, he helped us clean up our downstairs storage room and removed a lot of clutter. He saw a pair of his old fishing waders in the storage room, hip boots, so he took them back to Atlanta. Last week, my grandson James talked Jimmie into an early morning duck hunt in a swamp somewhere in Fulton County. Jimmie remembered his waders, and tossed them in the truck. … [Read more...]
A Snow White Dove
“On the wings of a snow white dove He sends his pure, sweet love As a sign from above On the wings of a dove ” A great song recorded by Ferlin Husky, Dolly Parton and others. Don Taylor of Farmville had a visit from a snow white dove over the holidays. Don said he wasn’t sure if it was a pigeon or albino dove. He tried to get close for a picture, but he said it was … [Read more...]
