Steve Layman, Band Director of the Charlottesville band, announced that the final Cville Band Concert of the summer will be on Tuesday, August 31 at 7:30 at the Ting Pavilion at 70 E. Main Street. “Cville Band comes home to the Downtown Mall, our traditional summer venue, for the final concert of the summer season,” he said. “The Band has prepared a fun program for the entire family, … [Read more...]

Chicken Thighs are Best
When I was a boy and mom cooked fried chicken, my favorite piece was a thigh. Daddy begrudgingly shared one of the thighs with me while my younger sibs went for the legs and breasts. Mom ate whatever was left, usually the back and wings. Today, the best values in the meat department in most any grocery store are chicken thighs. They offer the most meat for the pound and the most flavor … [Read more...]
Hamburger Bar-b-que
The internationally famous wild game chef, Ed Morris, sent me a recipe that he claims is good enough to recommend. Hamburger Bar-b-que. Ed’s secret is celery. Yes, celery, that inconspicuous vegetable that lends so much flavor to everything it seasons. Ed says to take 2 pounds of ground beef (my hunch is that ground venison would also be dynamite) and 1 cup of chopped celery. Brown … [Read more...]
All Quiet on the Bird Front
The yard is quiet for a change. No more air battles between contending cardinals or rumbling robins. No more mad dashes to and from feeders to keep the cheeks of the baby birds filled and no more panhandling from the starlings and grackles. The eerie cry of the catbirds is also gone. They, too, have moved on. Instead, there is an occasional buzzing sound around the sugar water feeder … [Read more...]
Where’s the Beef?
It’s your last meal and the warden says you can have a fast-food hamburger. What’s it going to be? “You deserve a break today,” from McDonalds. “Have it your way,” at Burger King. “All kinds of good stuff,” from Hardee’s. Or, “Where’s the beef” at Wendy’s. Seriously, if you only had one choice, what would it be? The Big Mac from McDonald’s would have to be a contender. … [Read more...]
Lots of Dollar Bills for Billfish
Eighty-one teams fished the Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament last week. Cash awards totaling $785,250 were handed out. That’s a lot of dollar bills for the big bills – the blue and white marlin. It’s the peak season for them right now. As a rule, the billfish action gets hot and heavy from now until the first big Atlantic hurricane passes by. Then it slows down considerably, but for … [Read more...]
Frog Hanky Panky
We stocked our little goldfish pond with a half-dozen bullfrog tadpoles this spring, and one by one, they emerged. Then we saw a 7th frog, then an 8th. Some hanky panky was going on. The unaccounted-for amphibians were leopard frogs. One night this spring, there were some frog shenanigans going on and now we have a pond full of leopard frogs. There was even one born in our small lily pond, though … [Read more...]
Amberjacks, For the Record
When Nancy and I were first married, we went on a vacation with Tom and Pat Bruffy to Atlantic Beach, NC. Tom and I were big fishermen and somehow convinced our wives to go with us on a deep-sea adventure. They went, though Nancy got a bit sea-sick and Pat screamed bloody murder when thunder and lightning boomed all around us, but we were catching fish, so we stayed out in it. We … [Read more...]
Biggest, Baddest Burgers
The best burger in Cville? It’s hard to say. We certainly have lots of good choices. One restaurant that stands out, though, is Timberwood Grill near Forest Lakes. Often, when Nancy and I eat out on short notice, we choose Timberwood. They have nice exterior dining on pleasant evenings and in the winter, we like to pull up a stool and sit at the bar. Without exception, the service has … [Read more...]
