Who is the most beautiful – Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Michelle Pfeiffer, or Catherine Zeta-Jones? That’s not a fair question. They are all beautiful. Likewise, all four of the major Hawaiian Islands are draped in beauty. How could you choose one over the other in terms of beauty? When push comes to shove, I would choose Kauai as the “fairest of them all.” Kauai, the fourth … [Read more...]
A Birthday Marlin
What do you want for your birthday this year? Let me see. How about a deep-sea fishing trip for blue marlin off the coast of Hawaii? Sometimes you get what you ask for. On November 30, my - uhm - 39th birthday, I went fishing out of Kona, Hawaii, the Blue Marlin Capitol of the World. Nancy had arranged my special trip through Norwegian and I joined 2 couples from Montreal aboard a 45-foot … [Read more...]
Some Like it Hot
On the day our Delta flight touched down in Hawaii, Mona Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, erupted after a 38-year sabbatical. A series of earthquakes had triggered an explosion of molten lava from the center of the earth. Someone had crossed paths with Pele. Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire, is said to have the sole power to create life through destruction. Only she … [Read more...]
Sail With Norwegian
We are not world travelers. In fact, I consider Nags Head to be an exotic vacation destination, but Nancy and I have taken a few cruises, the last three with Norwegian. We have been most satisfied. In reality, Norwegian Cruise Lines has nothing to do with Norway. It’s an American cruise line headquartered in Miami. It’s the third-largest cruise line in the world in terms of … [Read more...]
A Chance of Rain
Hi! Jim Cantore here with the Weather Channel. Checking the forecast here along the Road to Hana in Maui, it looks like rain throughout the day and into the evening. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for – let’s see - more rain, followed by rain throughout the rest of the week. In fact, it looks like rain every day this month. We are predicting over 150 inches of rain this year – sometimes as … [Read more...]
Thar’ She Blows
We had signed up for a sunset cruise and a whale watching excursion through the Pacific Whale Foundation on our first evening in Maui. We went one for two. There was no sunset that evening. There was a nice cloud-set, as it had been unusually overcast that day, but the sun was nowhere to be found. There were, however, whales to be watched – two adult humpback whales and one of their … [Read more...]
Flying to Hawaii
In order to get to Hawaii in a reasonable amount of time, you pretty much have to fly on a plane. The thing about flying on a plane is that the very best you can do is touch down at your intended destination on schedule with all your body parts intact. The worse thing is that the Coast Guard is out searching for Delta Flight 255’s little black box at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. … [Read more...]
Exciting Hallmark Channel Movies
Christmas season is upon us. The reason I know is that every night there are Hallmark Christmas movies on TV. If Nancy beats me to the remote control, that’s what we watch. Often, the movies are about Princes and Kings in little known European countries who end up falling for and proposing to ordinary American women who then become Princesses and Queens. And it happens almost every … [Read more...]
Hawaii Bound
We’re going again. As you read this edition of Cville Buzz, we will be on our way to Baltimore. Early, early Saturday morning we will fly the friendly skies to Salt Lake City, touch down, stretch our legs and head for Honolulu. Sometime that afternoon (who knows what time it will really be) we will board a Norwegian Cruise Ship and visit Maui, The Big Island and Kawaii. We have lots of exciting … [Read more...]
Buy More Hams
Want to really stretch your grocery budget? The Inflation Fighter (Yours Truly) says to buy and serve more hams and the best value is often the Butt Section of a Smoked Ham. A ham will feed an army. It’s pretty much all lean meat, it’s not fattening, and you can serve it numerous ways including as a meat for breakfast and super, duper sandwiches. It’s also reasonably priced - $1.79 a pound, … [Read more...]
