I called one of my insurance companies recently. There was some confusion about an automatic draft. The first person I spoke with was an American and I could understand her perfectly. But then I was transferred to another representative – the one in the service department –from Sri Lanka or Botswana or perhaps Mars. I couldn’t tell. All I knew is that she could not speak the type of English I … [Read more...]
Sloppy Josés
I made a fun dish this week. Nothing fancy, just fun, and pretty good. I made what I call Sloppy Josés. Not Sloppy Joe’s, Sloppy Josés. It’s Mexican, you know, and a version of the American Sloppy Joes. When we were Senior High Advisers at church, one of the foods most in demand for Sunday night meals were Sloppy Joes. The kids loved them, and if your kids like Mexican, they’ll love … [Read more...]
The Chase is On
Last week, I saw a hawk with a rat in its talons flying along Rt. 29 near Kroger’s. On the hawk’s tail were a half dozen crows in pursuit. I don’t think the crows were interested in the hawk’s recent kill, they just wanted him out of their area. Hawk’s love to eat baby crows. Then, I saw a small flock of grackles chasing a crow. Crows like baby grackles as a main course when available. I have … [Read more...]
Aldi’s Rules
They should hire me to be their spokesman, Aldi’s, that is. I am a non-stop preacher of the Aldi gospel of great prices. I am also a frequent visitor and shopper at the convenient store in Albemarle Square. Aldi’s, I believe, has better prices that Wal-Mart and they simply crush Kroger’s. They also have great service and extremely friendly personnel – which makes shopping there a more enjoyable … [Read more...]
Happy Father’s Day
I’m getting a new gas grill for Father’s Day. My old one died. The reason I know I will be getting a new grill is because my wife dragged me to Lowe’s to pick one out. Naturally. Nancy didn’t like the El Cheapo one I chose. I always get the cheap ones because – no matter how much you pay – they only last 3 years. Then those little jets that shoot the juice to the flames tucker out and even the Gas … [Read more...]
Spades Are Trump
Saltwater fishing in Virginia is at its peak. Just about every species is available now. Like Spadefish. Large Spadefish are being caught around a very crowded Chesapeake Light Tower. Soon they will be more plentiful in other locations, around buoys and at the CBBT. They feed on small crustaceans and jellyfish. You can use cut bait like clam strips, squid strips, or shrimp pieces. You can also … [Read more...]
Concern about Non-Native Species
By Bruce Ingram If there is one common theme across Virginia right now concerning our fisheries, it is the threat that non-native species present to our long-established gamefish. DWR Region 1 Fisheries Manager Clint Morgeson details the danger that the blue catfish presents in the Tidewater region. “Blue cats were stocked by the then-Game Commission in the 1970s as a response to … [Read more...]
Hot Cars and Great Music.
Boomers were fortunate enough to grow up in an age of Hot Cars and Great Music. Our cars had lots of chrome and fancy grills and nasty engines. We laid rubber with every start and cruised the drive-ins while The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Jan and Dean and Wilson Pickett filled our radios with music that will never be duplicated. Ours was the age of 56 Chevys, 57 Mustangs, 66 GTOs, 67 … [Read more...]
Peas to Please
Earlier this spring, I had a small, empty space in my garden, and I also had a pack of garden pea seeds that needed a home. I planted 2 short rows and put a trellis beside each row. The peas took advantage of the rain and warming sun and each and every one sprouted. They also followed the instructions and scaled the little trellis to produce blooms, then peas. I resisted the … [Read more...]
A Certified Frog Trainer
I have finally decided what I want to be when I grow up. A frog trainer. It’s a career with unlimited opportunities and very little competition. Afterall, when is the last time you saw a Certified Frog Trainer offering his services on Craig’s List? Here’s how I arrived at my new endeavor. Five of us were sitting on the patio beside our goldfish pond after a southern inspired feast … [Read more...]
