Doing outdoor reports this year is like handing out “Frying With Lard” brochures at a Weight Watcher’s Convention. It’s pretty slim pickings out there. The giant bluefin tuna re still frolicking off the Outer Banks and walleye are gearing up to spawn in freshwater.
In the Bay, some huge rockfish remain, though it’s catch and release until June. Small stripers and specks are hitting in a winter hotspot – the Elizabeth River.
In freshwater, the first major fish to spawn are yellow perch and they are just now beginning to stage in the Rappahannock. Their larger cousins, walleye, are starting to bite in earnest. At Lake Anna a bag of 5 bass weighing a whopping 30 pounds won a weekend tournament. Also at Anna, limits of stripers have been caught at mid-lake.
