Sharks don’t mind the cold saltwater, now in the lower to mid-fifties, so if you have ever wanted to catch a few, now’s a good time. There have been numerous shark catches at Hatteras and lots of dogfish reported on the Nags Head beaches.
The warm weather this week has improved surf fishing with some nice red drum reported. Puppy Drum, Black Drum and a few Blow Toads are also biting near Hatteras. On the sound side, there has been some very good Speckled Trout and Puppy Drum fishing on the western side of the Pamlico, and there are still reports of keeper Stripers being caught around the bridges.
While commercial Bluefin season may have come to a close, there are still plenty of giants out there to catch and release as well as smaller slot size fish. We have also heard good reports of Blackfin out of Hatteras.
In the Bay, it’s mostly tautogs and speckled trout back in the rivers and inlets, but the water is warming and the croakers and other sport fish won’t be far behind.
In freshwater, crappie are beginning to stir in the big lakes. The striper bite remains strong at Anna. The Chickahominy River is giving up some big yellow perch.
