The Tuna Duck set sail out of Hatteras this Wednesday, hoping to find some bluefin tuna. No luck with the tuna, unfortunately, but the boat did happen upon a whale taking a nap in the ocean’s surface. That’s where they sleep, you know. Whales breathe air and they sleep in the surface – and so it was for this tired mammal.
On Monday, the Tuna Duck had better luck with the fish. Mahi were biting and they loaded up.
Parties out of Pirate’s Cove caught and released some bluefin tuna on Wednesday and put a 40-pound wahoo and some yellowfins in the fish box.
A few black and red drum were hitting in the Hatteras surf with an occasional speckled trout. The water is still too cold for much action on the northern beaches.
In Virginia, some ‘togs are biting along with a flounder here and there. It should happen soon.
Freshwater
Somebody woke the crappie. They are turned on throughout the state – in big lakes and small, in rivers and ponds. Time to get a bucket of shiners and go catch a few.
The yellow perch bite is also on at the Chickahominy and many other tidal rivers. White perch are biting in the James. The upper James is in excellent condition now and the big female smallmouth are biting. Shad are making their maiden appearance in tidal waiters, but the big bite should happen in early April,
Bass are hitting in Anna, Buggs and Gaston. Smith Mountain is also beginning to heat up within each upward tick of the thermometer.
Trout fishing is excellent with plenty of fish stocked and more on the way.
