
In fresh water, it’s crappie time. The silver warriors are heading shallow in advance of the spawn and are feeding heavily. The yellow perch bite remains good in tidal rivers and in many lakes. The annual shad run is just getting underway as the schools move up the rivers to spawn. Some nice smallmouth are being caught on the upper James. The water temps in many lakes are well up into the 60’sand it’s starting to happen.
Saltwater Report
Though the weather is warming, it takes time to heat up saltwater, but we’re getting there. Offshore captains are finding triggerfish and sea bass on structure. Speckled trout are biting inshore along with a few pups. Bluefin tuna have now moved in close to the mouth of the Bay. Striped bass are active in the lower bay, though it’s catch and release.
On the Outer Banks, the ocean temp is up to 57. The drum bite in the surf is just getting started Tuna are in the Gulf Stream for boats that sail.
