Cold water? The bass don’t seem to mind a bit. Bags weighing 22 pounds won events at both Anna and Buggs. The water temps at both lakes are in the low 40’s. That usually slows things down, but not the bass. Crappie, either. At Buggs a winter crappie event was won with 12 pounds for a 7 fish limit. They fish are deep at Buggs, but they’ll eat if you can reach them,
The yellow perch run is also on in tidal rivers like the James, Chick and Rapp. The best fishing now is in the creeks and inlets. Some huge cats are biting near Hopewell and the smallmouth fishing on the upper James is looking up.
Soon, it will be spring, but lots of fish are biting right now.
Saltwater
Unfortunately, there are now reports of dead speckled trout in Lynnhaven Inlet. This, however, is a common occurrence in cold February’s. Some diehard anglers are still targeting the specks, especially in the Elizabeth River. Some puppy drum are biting there as well. MirrOlures and swim baits are working.
OBX
The Hatteras surf has been giving up both black and red drum. The south end of the island has been very productive.
On the northern beaches, some seals are showing up to rest and sun themselves. Use caution and don’t crowd the animals if you see them.
Puppy drum and specks are being caught back in the sounds. Boats making it to the Gulf Stream are finding some giant bluefin tuna.
