Nancy and I were headed to Urbanna for the Oyster Festival and passed through West Point about 1:30. It was perfect timing for a little lunch, and I pulled into Diggs Seafood located just east of West Point. I ordered Deviled Crab and Nancy got a Crab Muffin. Both were out of sight delicious.
My first experience with Diggs Seafood came years ago on a croaker fishing trip to the Mattaponi River. We pulled into Diggs, and I thought we were going to buy bait, but my host ordered Deviled Crabs. I got some, too, and it was dynamite. Since that day, anytime I’m anywhere near West Point, I’ll pick up some crab delicacies from Diggs Seafood.
I had never tried their Crab Muffins, but if it’s possible, they were even better than the Deviled Crab – lots of crab meat and cheese piled high on a toasted English Muffin. Wow.
Diggs cooks everything fresh daily. The crab meat you eat for lunch was likely picked that morning.
The hours of Diggs are strange, and it’s often hit or miss when you pass through. They are now open from Thursday through Sunday from 11 am till 6. They do a steady and constant business throughout the day as locals and passers-by stop in and order. It is strictly take-out.
The address of Diggs Seafood is 6570 Lewis B. Puller HWY. in Mattaponi, but it’s really a little east of West Point off Rt. 33.
If you get anywhere near West Point and they are open, by all means, order some Deviled Crabs or a Crab Muffin – maybe both. You won’t regret it.
