There is an old tale about a fellow who prayed every day to win the lottery, and he never did. When he went to heaven, he asked God why it was that he never won.
And God said, “You had to have bought a ticket.”
Beef and some grocery prices are high, but they don’t have to be. It’s kind of like “You had to have bought a ticket”, but it’s this: “You have to go to the grocery store on a regular basis to really save money.”
Lots of people like to grocery shop on Sundays, but Monday morning is the ideal time for great savings – especially at Sam’s, Costco, Wal-Mart and Kroger’s. Steaks, beef, chicken, roasts, some vegetables and lots of foods are marked down. Maybe you don’t need ribeye steaks in the next few days, but eventually you will. I bought a beautiful 1 1/2-pound ribeye recently at Kroger’s for $8. I bought a package of 12 drumsticks for $5. Food Lion had a huge chuck roast (probably too big for most folks) that was marked down from $38 to $19. Buy it and cut in half. Even at regular price, if you buy in bulk and then break down into smaller packages, you’re sure to save money.
So, if you see something on sale that you eat regularly, buy it. Then, get out the old trusty Food Saver, package it and freeze it. If you are one of those who calls in their grocery store orders, you’ll never be able to take advantage of these savings. The more you go to the grocery store, the better your odds of finding specials that can save you a pile of money.
