We were at the West Virginia State Fair early this week and ate our way through the sprawling Fairgrounds, noshing on goodies such as genuine 4-H Country Ham Sandwiches, hot and just-cooked Ben Ellen Doughnuts, Pizza Slices, Corn Dogs, Deep-Fried Oreos (yes, Fried Oreos), thick, creamy Milkshakes, and other certified, artery-clogging Fair foods. As we left, we passed by a stand advertising Pepperoni Rolls, but were too stuffed to partake.
Pepperoni Rolls are a West Virginia tradition and creation. They were a staple in a coal miner’s lunch pail because they were filling, delicious and did not require refrigeration. West Virginians certainly know how to cook and eat Pepperoni Rolls, but so does a certain pizzeria in Charlottesville.
Vocelli’s Pizza.
Vocelli’s hand make their Pepperoni Rolls, which they call Pepperoni Vocelli Rolls. They use their fresh, hand-tossed dough to pepperoni, extra cheese and brushed with white garlic sauce. They are yummy.
Since we didn’t get to sample any rolls at the Fair, we ordered some that night from Vocelli’s and they were as good as genuine West Virginia Pepperoni Rolls.
Vocelli’s is located in the Woodbrook Shopping Center at 1857 Seminole Trail Rt. 29) in Charlottesville. Call them at (434) 977-4992 or order on line at weborder.vocellipizza.com
