Nancy said she wanted Fried Chicken for dinner after a long ride back from Lake Norman, and she likes KFC. I used to, but now, I think it’s overpriced, it’s lower quality and the chicken is poorly cooked.
I remember when you could get a bucket (8 pieces) for $3.99, then it crept higher. To me, it was hard to believe someone would pay more than 50c for a piece of chicken and that included 2 wings. Now, it’s significantly more.
I ordered a bucket with 2 sides and 4 biscuits, and it was $30, not counting tax. I ordered Original Recipe, but they gave me “Extra Greasy”. It was if they had dumped the chicken directly from the fryer into the box. The thighs and legs were okay (but very greasy) but when I looked for a wing, there were two small wings in the bottom. KFC used to serve fat, juicy wings with some breast meat attached. These looked like quail wings. Maybe two bites of meat per wing if that. Larger wings are now more in demand because of the Buffalo Wild Wing craze, so if you buy wings from 8-week-old fryers, they’re smaller and cheaper, and these clearly were. The breasts were tough and stringy. The 4 biscuits in the box were tasteless, not in the same league as Bojangles’s or Popeyes.
It’s possible that the Emmet Street KFC is just run poorly and the other KFC’s are still reliable. But it will be quite a while before I go back to that one, and if Col. Sanders were still around, he’d not be pleased.
