Lake Anna Report

May 19, 2016 by Jim Brewer

At Lake Anna, the bass are hungry after a grueling spawn – and so are the crappie. Last Sunday at Anna Point, Preston Cox and Larry Wollersheim weighed in a bag of bass at 20.41 pounds. Their big fish went 6.52. Wayne Holder weighed in the best crappie in April at two pounds even while Kurt Hammerschmidt caught – and released – the best striper weighing 14 pounds, 9 ounces.   Potomac … [Read more...]

What’s a Flier?

May 12, 2016 by Jim Brewer

I was scanning through a recent Chickahominy Lake report by Capt. Art Conway and saw that his party had caught two fliers. I wasn’t exactly sure what a flier was, so I looked it up. As it turns out, I have caught a few of these interesting sunfish in the past, but I wasn’t sure at the time what they were. Here’s the scoop. The flier is a distinct and singular species of fish. It's not a … [Read more...]

May Showers, Good Fishing

May 5, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Capt. Steve Chaconas doesn’t mind the rain when it comes to fishing on the Potomac. Steve says some big fish are being caught and if the weather holds up, this could be one of the best weeks of the year. While aggressive baits like Lucky Craft LVR D-7 lipless crankbaits are good to snap free from grass and slow rolling spinnerbaits and Chatterbaits will also produce, it's soft plastics in the … [Read more...]

Trout Report

April 28, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Much needed rain this week has brought the mountain streams back to great fishing levels. Many flies are hatching including March Browns, Cahills and numerous caddis. Angler’s Lane in Lynchburg reports that the rainbows and browns in the lower Jackson are feasting on a good caddis hatch, which makes for more strikes. Try a Purple Haze, Green Monster or a Rubber Leg Stonefly for best results. … [Read more...]

Shad On The Run

April 21, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Mark Scott of Charlottesville reports: I fished the Chickahominy River at Walker's Dam on April 18. Bob Kramer, also from Charlottesville, went with me. He had never been shad fishing, so that is now off of his bucket list. We fished with our guide, host and good friend, Jon Lamb, who did an incredible job of putting us on and keeping us on the fish. We had a consistent run of Hickory Shad, … [Read more...]

Lake Orange Open For Business

April 12, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Though Lake Orange is open year round, 24-7, the bait shop and marina, Angler’s Landing is now open for the season, renting boats and dispensing bait and tips. Darryl Kennedy, who runs Anglers Landing, says his fish are biting. “The water is clear and the temperature is staying around the mid 50s,” Darryl noted.  “The largemouth bass and crappie are in a pre-spawn pattern. Anglers using live … [Read more...]

Fish in the Shallows

April 7, 2016 by Jim Brewer

According to Capt. Steve Chaconas, bass in the Potomac River have committed to the spawning flats, but will move a bit deeper this week as water cools. “Expect water to be cooling from the low 60s to upper 50s this week,” he says. For fish close to drops, find them on the drops. In these areas, it’s drop shots and shaky heads. For shaky heads, try 1/4 ounce Mizmo BarbWire heads with black … [Read more...]

Trout Heritage Day

March 31, 2016 by Jim Brewer

For those who miss the opening day of trout season in Virginia, the Game Department has set aside Saturday April 2 as the next best thing – Trout Heritage Day. The selected streams and lakes will be closed on Friday, to allow for a big stocking, then reopen on Saturday at 9 AM giving everyone a chance to arrive and set up. Looks like decent weather on Saturday. Pick a stream from below and take … [Read more...]

Saugeye Caught at Lake Anna

March 17, 2016 by Jim Brewer

On March 12, Dyllon Kincer brought what looked to be a nice walleye to the Anna Point Marina scales. But it wasn’t a walleye. It was a saugeye. A saugeye is a hatchery-produced hybrid - a cross between a female walleye and a male sauger, and they are well suited for reservoirs such as Anna. Although saugeye are a cross between walleye and sauger, they often behave differently than walleye, … [Read more...]
