In Virginia, big stripers are moving in from the ocean as the season draws to a close on New Year’s Day. Fish to 60 pounds are going for live feels. Some nice sea bass are coming from the ocean wrecks, though that season also closes Dec. 31. Trout and puppy drum are biting in Lynnhaven and Rudee inlets. Offshore charters are scoring with tuna, wahoo and albacore when weather … [Read more...]
Swordfish and More Big Stripers
The weather has been a hindrance on many days, but Virginia’s saltwater anglers remain focused on an excellent striper season. A number of 40 to 60-pounders have hit the scales. Most of these large fish are coming from the eastern side of the Bay, Plantation Light to Cape Charles, where boats are drifting and slow trolling with eels. School-sized rockfish are also available for anglers casting … [Read more...]
It’s All About Stripers
Fresh water, saltwater, ocean and sounds, if it weren’t for striped bass, there wouldn’t be much in the way of a fishing report. In Virginia waters, Chris Bait and Tackle on the Eastern Shore says that fishing has picked up quite of bit. School sized stripers in the 16- to 30-inch size have been caught by anglers fishing between Bouys 38a and 40. Bucktails, metal jigs and casting lures have … [Read more...]
In Search of Big Stripers
It’s December and local tackle shops, marinas and boat ramps are buzzing with activity as anglers prepare to hit the water in search of giant stripers. December is big rockfish season on the lower Chesapeake Bay and it’s off to a good start. Some monsters have already hit the scales over on the Eastern Shore. These big fish usually show first around the Plantation Light and the area between the … [Read more...]
Lake Anna Heating Up
Fishing has been excellent at Anna with schools of shad roaming the lake. Finding the shad will almost guarantee fish. Medium to jumbo minnows and swimbaits are working best for stripers and larger bass. Smaller fish are taking small minnows, small plastic grubs and small Hopkins jigging spoons. Lots of jumbo white perch, yellow perch, and crappie are to be had in the creeks on jigging spoons, … [Read more...]
Tales of Br’er Fox
I was sitting on a stump in southern Albemarle County with a 30-30 rifle, hoping that a nice buck might happen by and give up his tenderloins, but Br’er Deer never showed. Br’er Fox did, however, and what a beautiful creature. About an hour before sunset, he appeared from behind a tree, nose to the ground, on the exact trail a squirrel had just used. Br’er Fox was hopping down that … [Read more...]
Goose Hunting Tips
Central Virginia has turned into something of a hot spot for goose hunting. We have literally thousands of geese with lots of water and grain fields available. Since most farmers (and golf course superintendents) hate geese, it’s usually easy to get permission to hunt. Do a little scouting, see where the geese land and feed and take it from there. But how? Below are 12 tips from some … [Read more...]

Great Fishing on the South River
South River Fly Shop reports that the fishing is great on the South River. Water levels are above normal, but clear. There are lots of big rainbows and even bigger browns being caught on nymphs and streamers. Jwal's Rubber Legs Tung-stone, Reed's Micro-mop, Taleteller's Frenchie's, Arlie's Gnarlie Caddis, and Tyler's Mini-truders have been go-to patterns. Several back-to-back high water events … [Read more...]
Fly Fishing Passage Creek
By Harry Murray Passage Creek flows through the history-rich Fort Valley just east of Edinburg, Virginia. George Washington surveyed this area when he was young and there are well-documented stories that he considered using this well protected area for his army. Stonewall Jackson’s “foot cavalry” used the valley frequently which would be expected since many of his men were from the … [Read more...]
