A Journey to the Promised Land

July 14, 2017 by Jim Brewer

For me, a 25 handicapper - even with mulligans - the Promised Land is but a fleeting illusion. They say it’s beautiful, lush and a joy to walk upon. It brings great comfort to all those who find it and enjoy its privileges. I have read much about the Promised Land – not only in the Bible, but also in Golf Digest. The Promised Land I speak of, of course, is the fairway. In the world of … [Read more...]

The Golfer’s New Arm

June 29, 2017 by Jim Brewer

A golfer was involved in a terrible car crash and was rushed to the hospital. Just before he was put under, the surgeon popped in to see him. "I have some good news and some bad news," says the surgeon. "The bad news is that I have to remove your right arm!" "Oh God, no!" cries the man "My golfing is over. Please Doc, what's the good news?" "The good news is that I have another … [Read more...]

The Curse of Uneven Lies

June 8, 2017 by Jim Brewer

It’s hard enough to hit a golf ball into that elusive piece of real estate known as a fairway when it’s resting on a dead level, manicured tee box. But when the ball comes to a stop on a slope steep enough to make a mountain goat stumble, the average golfer is in trouble. That is, unless he or she knows how to adjust the swing, the equipment and body weight to compensate for the uneven … [Read more...]

Callaway Chrome Soft Balls

June 1, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I am usually not picky about golf balls. As long as they don’t have “XXX” on the sides, I’ll play them. Didn’t really think it made any difference except for the prestige factor. But last Christmas, my favorite and only son, Jimmie, knew that his Dad was low on golf balls and he gave me a couple dozen Callaway Chrome Soft golf balls. They are the finest golf balls I have ever played. … [Read more...]

Staying Cool at Swanannoa

May 25, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Last Wednesday a week ago, it was 94 degrees in Charlottesville. On Afton mountain, it was 83 and that’s where my three golf amigos and I teed it up. We played Swanannoa Country Club. We had a fun round and stayed cool. I’ve played much nicer golf courses than Swannanoa Country Club on Afton Mountain, but I don’t think I have played any more enjoyable courses. Swannanoa is an easy … [Read more...]

Waynesboro Country Club – Back in Action

May 11, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Golf courses and country clubs have been struggling in recent years. Slammed by the Great Recession, the labor intensive industry took a hit, and what’s more, even after the recession, not enough young golfers have been taking up the sport to replace the old duffers that are hanging up their TaylorMades. Too expensive and too time consuming are the common reasons. I was most disappointed to … [Read more...]

The Importance of the Pitch Shot

April 13, 2017 by Jim Brewer

How important is the pitch shot in golf? Consider that if Kenny Perry had made just one out of two good pitch shots on the final two holes at the 2009 Masters, he would now have one green jacket instead of none. But how important is the ability to hit consistent pitch shots for the average golfer? According to Jack Snyder, Head Golf Professional at Glenmore Country Club, a high handicap … [Read more...]
