Thistles: A Beautiful Weed

September 7, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I have a love/hate relationship with thistles. The “hate” part comes back when I fly fish Mossy Creek. The stream is especially productive in September when leaping grasshoppers miss their mark and plop in the stream – to the delight of some large brown trout. But fly casting involves back casts where you flip the line backwards to load the rod, only to see the line settle in the stream with no … [Read more...]

Ham Muffins

September 7, 2023 by Jim Brewer

You can’t really buy a small ham. If you want the goodness of a big, fat ham portion, it’s going to be 9 or 10 pounds or more. Ten pounds makes a lot of meals for two people. But I buy hams anyway and eat sliced ham for breakfast, for lunch as sandwiches and chip away at it before freezing the remains and making soup at a later date. After my latest ham purchase, I found a recipe to help finish … [Read more...]

It’s Spot Time

September 7, 2023 by Jim Brewer

The spot have turned on in the bay and tributaries with fish running larger than usual. The Rappahannock near the Rt. 1 Bridge at Whitestone has been very productive. The Hampton/Norfolk area has also been good. Bloodworms are the preferred bait if you can find them, A second choice is FishBites in the bloodworm scent. Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel are abundant in the bay and along the … [Read more...]

An Inshore Grand Slam

September 7, 2023 by Jim Brewer

A Grand Slam home run is when you clear all the bases with a mighty blow. A Grand Slam in golf is a sweep of The Masters, PGA, the US Open and the British Open. A Grand Slam in the Gulf Stream is to land a Blue Marlin, a White Marlin, and a Sailfish on the same trip. An Inshore Grand Slam means you caught all three of the mighty sportfish back in the sounds – a Bluefish, a Speckled Trout, and a … [Read more...]

Pentatonix Coming to Cville

August 31, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I wrote about the Pentatonix a few weeks back after we attended their concert in Northern Virginia. But now, they are coming to Charlottesville on Dec. 9. We bought tickets again and we are assuming they will do their full repertoire of Christmas Music. Twill be the season, you know. If you are a fan of great music, I suggest you contact JPJ as soon as possible and join us for some great music … [Read more...]

See You Later Alligator

August 31, 2023 by Jim Brewer

Each generation has its own language and Boomer teens were no different. Highly influenced by fast cars and maintaining total cool at all times, young Boomers created a vocabulary all their own, and interestingly, many of the terms are still in use today. To be in “fat city”, for example, was to be in “great shape”. A “drag” was an extremely boring individual. The “fuzz” were policemen, and an … [Read more...]

Dr. Earth – Pump & Grow

August 31, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I have enjoyed an amazing tomato harvest this summer. I have four vines – two slicer tomato plants, one cherry tomato-type plant and a larger “Big Boy” type plant. Not only are they pumping out tomatoes on a regular basis (with many small fruits coming on and still some blossoms) but the tomatoes have been perfect – not a single blemish nor any end rot. This may all be pure, blind luck, but I have … [Read more...]

Speaking of Sports

August 31, 2023 by Jim Brewer

I don’t like what’s happening in the world of sports, particularly college football and basketball. It’s no longer student athletes playing rival schools. It has become a multi-billion-dollar business with professional athletes who transfer colleges at will in order to earn more for themselves and earn more for their new coaches. The Name Image and Likeness (NIL) money means that schools with … [Read more...]

A Teenchy, Tiny Frog

August 31, 2023 by Jim Brewer

One of my favorite Uncle Remus stories is “Teenchy Tiny Duck”, a tale of little puddle duck who found a satchel of money. I read it often and drive my children crazy, but my grandkids enjoy the story. I don’t have a Teenchy Tiny Duck in my backyard, but I do have a Teenchy Tiny Frog – a really Teenchy Tiny Frog. When he is perched on a lily pad, he appears to be about the size of marble, no … [Read more...]
