I have become fascinated with frogs. They are interesting creatures, to say the least. Since we installed our goldfish pond a few years back, frogs have paid us visits. Some have come via the tadpoles I bought and introduced to the pond while others just show up. Where they came from, I have no clue, but my neighbor Kenny Hoy said a snapping turtle showed up one day in his driveway, miles away … [Read more...]

Ten Sushi
Our daughter, Laura, treated us to a wonderful experience at Ten Sushi, a Modern Japanese-style Tapas Restaurant on the Downtown Mall and it was delightful. When I think of Sushi, I think of raw fish. Some I can eat but generally I’d rather have my fish cooked. At Ten Sushi, you can have it both ways, and everything I ate was delicious. The Tapas-style restaurant is a place to bring friends … [Read more...]
Going Ice Fishing
One day, a fellow at the local bar had a bit too much to drink and decided to go ice fishing. He staggered out onto the ice and drilled a hole. As he peered into the hole, a loud voice called out, “There are no fish down there.†The drunk walked several yards away and drilled another hole and peered into the hole and again the voice said, “There are no fish down there.†He then … [Read more...]
Lake Orange Walleye
There is not a lot happening on the fishing scene this time of year – too cold! But there are a few decent opportunities available, such as bass and pickerel fishing on the Chickahominy Lake and giant blue catfish action on the lower James. Another possibility that’s a little closer to home for Central Virginians is walleye fishing at Lake Orange. Walleye bite throughout the winter months. … [Read more...]
Genuine Flexible Flyers
The modest snow we had last week brought dozens of kids to the schoolyard behind our house where a gentle hill allows a long slide on sleds. Except, most kids didn’t have sleds, they had plastic toboggans. When we were kids, there was only one way to zip down a hill in the snow. A genuine Flexible Flyer. A Flexible Flyer was at the top of every kid’s wish list come Christmas time. … [Read more...]
Saving Food (and Money) With a Food Saver
I saw some really nice looking cole slaw, pre-cut, at Whole Foods. It had a variety of cabbages and I bought it. At $3.99, it was about twice as much as I would pay for regular cole slaw, and it was also about twice as much as I needed. When I got home, I made a batch of slaw with half the mixture, then got out my trusty Food Saver and air-sealed the rest of the mix. A week later, I opened the … [Read more...]
The Squirrel and the Hawk
We have a Cooper’s Hawk that has more or less set up shop in a large bush in our back yard. I think he may roost there, or at least he spends a lot of time there just hanging out. I can tell when he’s out there because the birds totally disappear, but not the squirrels. The other day, I saw the hawk perched on a limb and a squirrel scurried by, brushing up against the raptor. I often wonder … [Read more...]
Chicken Broccoli Lasagna
I made a fun dish last week. I made lasagna, but not ordinary lasagna. I whipped up a dish called Chicken Broccoli Lasagna and it turned out well, a nice change of pace. So, instead of using ground beef or ground sausage as the meat base, you use chicken. I used 2 chicken leg quarters. Since they were frozen, I decided to boil them until they were falling-off-the-bone tender. I shredded the … [Read more...]
