Mockingbird Visits

April 18, 2024 by Jim Brewer

We have lots of mockingbirds in our neighborhood, but not usually in my yard – which is unusual since I have tons of other birds that visit. But more and more I am drawing mockingbirds to my feeders. As it tuns out, the friendly gray birds are quite fond of peanut logs and sunflower hearts. I have often written about a product named C & S Peanut Log, which I have been hanging instead of … [Read more...]

Beware of Gourmet Salted Peanuts

April 18, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Went through a little place called Waverly not long ago. The peanut capitol of the world, or so they claimed. I had been dunking some bloodworms in the lower Chesapeake for croakers. Decided to come back the scenic route up Route 460 instead of fighting the US Navy getting off work on I-64 at Hampton. I loaded up on the croakers, by the way. Had a cooler full. So, it was back to Charlottesville … [Read more...]

Easy, Peasy Sausage Muffins

April 18, 2024 by Jim Brewer

If it ain’t easy, don’t cook it. Life is too short and there are too many easy recipes that result in great food to worry over a complicated recipe. Breakfast muffins, for example. Breakfast muffins are simply ideal. They are easy to make, and the next morning you pop one in the microwave and in minutes you’re eating a total breakfast with one muffin. Last week, I made a few Sausage … [Read more...]

Cage-Free Tomatoes?

April 18, 2024 by Jim Brewer

I have never liked tomato cages. Typically, the cages I have tried to erect in the past do quite well until the tomato vines grow larger and begin to hang heavy with fruit. Then, one day I go out to the garden and the cages are no longer erect but lying sideways on the ground. I have tried stakes, which do okay until the vines grow and fruit hangs heavy, then the tomato limbs flop down … [Read more...]

Drumroll Please

April 18, 2024 by Jim Brewer

The Dogwoods are blooming, the water temp is hitting 60, it’s time for a little drumming.  Black Drum are being caught along the shallow channel ledge running from Fisherman’s Island to north of Cape Charles. Good spots are Kiptopeake, the Cabbage Patch, the Concrete Ships, as well as the Highrise and 2nd & 3rd Islands of CBBT. Running tides, late afternoons and evenings and full moons are … [Read more...]

Tis the Season for Anadromous Fish

April 18, 2024 by Jim Brewer

By Alex McCrickard/DWR   Anglers living along the I-95 corridor can experience exceptional year-round fishing on Virginia’s tidal rivers. These rivers are popular destinations to chase largemouth bass, gar, bowfin, flathead catfish, blue catfish, and more, regardless of what month it is. However, every spring anglers are blessed with the seasonal arrival of ocean migrants that provide … [Read more...]

Guardian Angels

April 11, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Children today don’t need a Guardian Angel. Who needs angels when you have two over-protective parents that monitor each breath, public schools that inspect your lunch bags for trans-fats and a nanny-state government that requires seat belts and helmets when a youngster pulls up a chair to the kitchen table? But Boomers certainly needed Guardian Angels – a whole flock of them. It’s a wonder any … [Read more...]

Fluker Farms Meal Worms – Simply the Best

April 11, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Bluebird babies are just starting to peck their way out of the shells and Mom and Dad Bluebird will soon be hard at work. Those who truly love bluebirds assist the parents with heaping bowls full of meal worms. The little wigglers (larvae of the black beetle) are full of protein and supplement the chicks’ diets. I have been buying meal worms for over 25 years and my best source is Fluker Farms. … [Read more...]

  Violets are Blue

April 11, 2024 by Jim Brewer

Roses are red, my love Violets are blue Sugar is sweet, my love But not as sweet as you   So go the lyrics of “Roses are Red” by Bobby Vinton, circa 1962. I think of that song and slow dancing at Myrtle Beach when I drive through the hillsides of Virginia in early spring. That’s when the “Violets of Blue” are at their peak, often draping in splendid clusters along edges and … [Read more...]
