I decided to plant some spaghetti squash this spring and started three plants indoors - replanting in early May. I noticed, though, that the pack of seeds said a “fall melon” but that I could plant in the spring. Two of the vines made it and one of them produced a single melon, which grew to about the size of a grapefruit, then stopped growing. I finally picked it, we ate it, and it was good. … [Read more...]
Reid’s Pulls Through
It was looking pretty grim for Reid’s Super-Save Market on Preston Avenue. In the aftermath of COVID, creditors tightened the squeeze, many shelves were barren of goods and the end appeared to be in sight. Then, the community stepped in. We shopped there whenever we could, ignored the lack of many products but stocked up on things Reid’s were known for – like produce and meats – and now, the store … [Read more...]
Cornish Game Hens
In the never-ending battle for truth, justice, and a wide variety of entrees for dinner, one dish is often overlooked. Cornish game hens. They are easy to prepare, delicious and not expensive. The only problem is that they are always frozen hard as rocks, and you have to plan ahead to enjoy them. I suppose you could put them in a bowl of water and defrost in one day, but they take at least two … [Read more...]
The Perfect Bourbon
Bourbon is a hot commodity these days. Folks are spending small fortunes for certain brands and investing in others – such as Pappy Van Winkle. Bourbon aficionados are taking tours and tasting their way across Kentucky to find that special bourbon. That reminds me of a story my Daddy told me about the “perfect bourbon.” A man gave one of his employees a bottle of bourbon for Christmas and … [Read more...]
Branzino Sea Bass
I should shop at Trader Joe’s more often. They have some really interesting items – stuff you won’t find at other stores – like Branzino Sea Bass. I was at Trader’s last week to stock up on Moon X wines and poked around in the side aisles where I saw a package of frozen Sea Bass, not Chilean Sea Bass but Branzino Sea Bass. I am always looking for a fish to serve and I am leery of tilapia. You … [Read more...]
State Record Fallfish
On June 10, Danny Arbogast of Millboro, Virginia, landed a 3-pound, 12-ounce fallfish from the Cowpasture River to record the new state record for that species. Hall caught the trophy-sized fish with spinning tackle using a live minnow. The fish measured 20 ¾ inches, with a girth of 11 inches, and was officially weighed at the DWR regional office in Verona, Virginia. After biologist verification … [Read more...]
Everything’s Biting!
A "Smoker" King Mackerel The only problem now when fishing saltwater is deciding what to go after. Cobia, drum, Spanish macs, King macs, flounder, spadefish, sheepshead, togs, speckled trout, stripers, croakers, and spot – they are all biting and the next few days look even better with light winds, mild temperatures and clear skies. We can start with king mackerel since that bite … [Read more...]
Under (Tire) Pressure
I have not always had good luck when dealing with tire pressure and gauges – like last week. We were on I-40 heading from Greensboro to Winston Salem for a family reunion and the NCDOT had a done a number on one of the lanes as they prepared for a new highway. It sounded like a jack hammer as we drove across the jagged concrete, and I figured this was not good for the tires. I figured right, … [Read more...]
Mexican Mac and Cheese
I do a Mexican dish at least once every two weeks, and the entrees are easy – Burritos, Tacos, Mexican Casseroles, Tamales, etc. but I struggle sometimes with side dishes other than Refried Beans and a platter of tortillas and salsa. Last week, I tried something different. I did a Mexican Mac and Cheese. It was pretty good, but then how can you go wrong with Mac and Cheese? I made my Mac and … [Read more...]
Lumpkin’s Has Closed
I drove down to Scottsville last week, and entering the town, there was no Rooster to greet us. The Rooster was the Lumpkin’s calling card. It was gone and Lumpkin’s is gone. Lumpkin’s was one of the last, great comfort food diners. They had amazing breakfasts, as we often ate there before fishing trips on the James. They had biscuits and gravy and grits and eggs anyway you like them, plus … [Read more...]
