June 4, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Middle Bay Fishing Charters www.misskarencharterfishing.com   Rappahannock River Croaker fishing remains excellent according to Capt. Dick Whitehill aboard Miss Karen’s Fishing. Grassy Places

June 4, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I don’t get along very well with grass. It grows when I don’t want it to – on weekends and potential fishing and golfing days, and it doesn’t grow when I want it to, like in March, when I’m sick of winter. It also grows where I don’t want it to grow, like in the middle of my asphalt driveway. How does grass do that? Then, of course, it won’t grow where I want it to, like I bald places in my yard. … [Read more...]

Choosing The Right Ball

June 4, 2015 by Jim Brewer

The golf pros endorse this ball or that one because they perform better on the greens. The greens? I suppose they mean that elusive place you’ll eventually end up if you strike the ball often enough and don’t run out of them on a long Par 5 lined with water hazards. But when the pros speak of greens, they mean hitting the ball close to the flagstick on no worse than the second shot. It sometimes … [Read more...]

Road Trips: How To…

June 4, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Generally, the Road Trips column serves as a source of for interesting destinations. But sometimes, how you prepare for a road trip is as important as where you go. For the past two years, my wife Nancy and I have been fortunate enough to be allowed to take our Atlanta grandchildren on road trips to Cherrystone Campground on the Eastern Shore. It’s a place that we took our own kids as far back … [Read more...]

Roasted Lemon Chicken

June 4, 2015 by Jim Brewer

“Eat mo’ chiken!” That’s what the cows on the Chick-fil-A commercials advise. And the bovines are right! Especially if you’d like to get the needle on the bathroom scales heading the right way – down! I weigh myself daily, and with few exceptions, when I eat chicken for dinner the previous day, I lose weight. But chicken every day gets old, even fried chicken, which won’t allow you to lose … [Read more...]

When There Were Great Movies

June 4, 2015 by Jim Brewer

We don’t go to many movies, Nancy and I, but we recently shelled out twenty bucks for a Sunday matinee to see Hot Pursuit, with Reese Witherspoon and Sophia Vergara. It was quite an experience. We arrived in time, but the previews these days last as long as the feature film. I suppose it gives you more time to eat $15 worth of popcorn. If you order a large drink, it comes in a container about the … [Read more...]

On the Road for Snakeheads

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

A scary looking fish called a snakehead showed up in the Potomac River watershed about 10 years ago. They began biting hooks and lines and made numerous appearances in fish surveys. With all the negative publicity and hand-wringing by various game biologists, one would have though the Martians had landed and were eating our babies. Snakeheads, they said, were prolific breeders and would compete … [Read more...]

Cook It All On The Grill

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

My old gas grill died last week. At the end, it had fewer jets working than the candles on a toddler’s birthday cake. After a brief ceremony – recalling some really great outdoor meals and a few I’d rather not mention -– the grill was laid to rest. We like to think it’s in a better place – without bird droppings. I am now the proud owner of a new gas grill with 4 burners – and they all work. It … [Read more...]

Paperboy: A Boomer’s First Job

May 29, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Paperboy: A Boomer’s First Job   For many young Boomer males, becoming a “paper boy” was the first real job. There may have been a few “paper girls” out there, but not many. Today, automobiles – particularly those with 4-wheel drive – are the principal means of newspaper distribution. But in the years following the war and all the way through the 60’s and 70’s, paper boys on … [Read more...]
