Fishy Business

May 21, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Capt. Dick Whitehill of Miss Karen’s Fishing says the croaker bite is on and nice croakers at that! Last year, the “hard heads” were plentiful, but on the smallish side. Looks like the big boys have returned in force to the Rappahannock River and they are hungry. Capt. Whitehill is also catching lots of rockfish (that season is now in) but they are running small. He’s catching them by casting … [Read more...]

Mom, Can I Lick the Beater?

May 21, 2015 by Jim Brewer

There was no such thing as fast food in the 1950’s. There were a few drive-ins, but they were anything but fast. And drive-ins were a last resort for the families of the 1950’s and early 60’s. They were pricey and folks back then didn’t have a lot of extra cash to spend. Most families ate at home every night, and for Boomers looking back at some of those great meals, who could ever … [Read more...]

Chickahominy Lake

May 21, 2015 by Jim Brewer

The Chickahominy Lake is among Virginia’s most scenic bodies of water. Home to a multitude of fish and a variety of wildlife, cypress trees line the shore of the Chick and extend out into the water. Boats and kayaks can explore the inlets and lagoons and never be disappointed. The lake is a 1230-acre water supply reservoir located along the New Kent-Charles City county line. This impoundment of … [Read more...]

A Visit to Mountain Greens

May 21, 2015 by Jim Brewer

One good thing about being too poor to afford a golf membership at a ritzy country club is that you get to play a lot of different courses. And for those frugal golfers who invest a few bucks in a VSGA card each spring, you can often play some great courses at a fraction of the normal greens fees. Kevin and Greg, two of my regular golf amigos, wanted to play a different course last week and … [Read more...]

Southern Fried Bluegills

May 21, 2015 by Jim Brewer

I am aware of a certain fish that you can’t buy in a store, yet there is no more flavorful fish found anywhere. Furthermore, they are basically free. All you have to do is catch them, or have someone catch them for you. The fish I speak of is a bluegill, which is classified as a game fish in Virginia; therefore they cannot be sold commercially. Bluegills, sometimes referred to as “bream” in … [Read more...]

Action On The James

May 21, 2015 by Jim Brewer

James River/Scottsville Chris Wilkes at James River Runners Hatton Ferry reports that after a slow spring, fishing-wise, things are looking up on the James River. “I've had a few reports of great top water action on some of the smaller rivers where temps are probably a bit higher, but still they are still few and far between on the James,” Chris noted. “The big ones are starting to wake up if … [Read more...]

The Art of Putting

May 14, 2015 by Jim Brewer

A golf hole is 4 1/4-inches wide. A golf ball is much smaller, a couple inches or so. So it should be a fairly easy task to knock a small ball into the much larger hole when the ball is lying at rest on a manicured, bent grass green. This is called putting, a part of the game that makes golfers wake up in cold sweats on hot summer nights. Daryl Daughtrey, a retired PGA Head Golf Professional, … [Read more...]

Miss Karen Fishing

May 14, 2015 by Jim Brewer

www.misskarencharterfishing.com   For 34 years, Dr. Dick Whitehill paid the rent with his scalpel. He was a noted orthopedic surgeon for the University of Virginia Hospital. But for the past three years, since retirement, the doctor changed uniforms. Instead of scrubs, he now has a Penn baseball cap, a pair of well-worn jeans, and he fishes for a living. Capt. Dick Whitehill is a … [Read more...]

Ritzy Squash

May 14, 2015 by Jim Brewer

Sometimes, well many times, I like to root around in the kitchen and see what’s available, then cook that. No recipe, just instincts. Sometimes my wife wishes I hadn’t use a particular instinct, but for the most part, the food is edible and occasionally delicious. Such was the case last week when I cooked up a batch of Ritzy Squash. I had four small, yellow squash from Kroger’s - young squash, … [Read more...]
