Hunting On A Major Highway

June 30, 2016 by Jim Brewer

I once went bird hunting in the median strip on US Route 29. It was one of many amazing adventures in my career as an outdoorsman. Here’s how it happened. It was the mid-1970’s. Elvis was still alive and there were lots of quail in Virginia. Since I was a kid, bird hunting was my passion. At the time I had a young setter named Hunter - the best dog I’ve ever had. Hunter never, ever busted a … [Read more...]

TIMBER!!!!

June 30, 2016 by Jim Brewer

By Dan Corbin Late last year, the trust members of the family farm decided to research and implement some "good practice procedures" for the forested portion of the property. I contacted (Ed Furlough) the Virginia Department of Forestry, Charlottesville office to begin the conversation. A forester visited the site, did research and evaluations and delivered a binder of overview … [Read more...]

Curb Service

June 30, 2016 by Jim Brewer

How do young people meet these days? There are no drive-ins! Not only are there no more drive -in movies, there are no drive-in restaurants. No place to circle the parking lot looking for girls – or boys, as the case may be. Boomers look back nostalgically at the days when a young lady called a carhop would take your order for a frosted mug of A & W root beer and an order of fries. You’d give … [Read more...]

Plant Some Weeds!

June 30, 2016 by Jim Brewer

I saw some the other day. Weeds. Beautiful weeds. Milkweeds, actually. I saw them at Trump National Golf course near Charlotte. They were growing tall and proud beside the cart path. Fortunately, the course manager knows good weeds from bad ones and he left the milkweeds alone. The monarch butterflies thank him for that kind act. Milkweed is the only plant that can sustain a Monarch caterpillar … [Read more...]

Southern Fried Bluegills

June 30, 2016 by Jim Brewer

It’s bluegill time at a farm pond near you! You can’t buy bluegills in a grocery store or a seafood market, but they are such a culinary delight that all fish lovers should head out and catch a few. One word of advice. Fish very early in the day or late in the afternoon. Bluegills are sunfish and the sun hurts their eyes. Therefore they swim to deep water during the hat of the day and return … [Read more...]

Trump National In Charlotte

June 30, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Want a shock to your system? Play a public course like Mallard Point in Mooresville (outside of Charlotte) for two days in a row, then tee it up at nearby Trump National bordering Lake Norman. It’s like jumping into an ice-cold pool on a hot August afternoon. It’s quite a shock to your golfing system. We had a family reunion in Mooresville (about 15 miles from Charlotte) last weekend and all … [Read more...]

Cobia Fishing Is Fantastic

June 23, 2016 by Jim Brewer

By Dr. Ken Neill, III Cobia fishing is nothing short of fantastic. Chumming is producing a lot of fish and when conditions allow, so is sight fishing. The big red drum are still around but most are now being caught by anglers targeting cobia. Some small to medium black drum showed in the James this week. Spanish mackerel are being caught in good numbers and size with some citation-sized macs … [Read more...]

Uniquely, Seven Oaks

June 23, 2016 by Jim Brewer

Dan Corbin has seen lots of properties during his 15 years as a Realtor in Charlottesville, but a recent listing really stands out. “I've never seen a set-up quite like this one,” Dan said of Seven Oaks. “It’s very unique and extremely private with 30 acres in a subdivision.” Dan notes there is even a flowing creek bordering the property. “There are established trails and quiet enjoyment, … [Read more...]

Fun At Swannanoa

June 23, 2016 by Jim Brewer

I’ve played much nicer golf courses than Swannanoa Country Club on Afton Mountain, but I don’t think I have played any more enjoyable courses. Swannanoa is an easy layout, the scenery is magnificent and the cool, mountain air is most agreeable. For the past 10 years, I have made it a point to visit Swannanoa at least once a year and this past week, my three golfing amigos joined me there for a … [Read more...]
