Dr. Julie Ball As summer comes to a close, anglers have enjoyed a few breaks from the stifling heat. Spanish mackerel action is still over the top, with big fish available, and plenty of them. Several citation-sized fish have already been caught and the action continues to sizzle. Boats are having good luck while trolling with small spoons around the tubes of the CBBT in Bay waters, and … [Read more...]
New Regs for the South River
Kevin Little, co-owner at South River Fly Shop in Waynesboro, reported that both proposed regulation amendments for the South River passed. As of January 1, 2017, the downtown section will become a year-round Catch and Release, Artificial Only Fishery. The upper South River Special Reg Area will become Fly Fishing Only with a limit of one trout over 20-inches, the same regulations as Mossy … [Read more...]

James The Baker
James Baker served as Chief of Staff under Ronald Reagan and was later appointed Secretary of State in the George H.W. Bush administration. I’m thinking about changing my name to James Baker Brewer because I have caught the baking bug. I love to cook, but frankly don’t know a lot about the art of baking. I’m not even sure how to put those two “turny” things in the mixer. As a mater of fact, I … [Read more...]
Late Season Tomatoes
I have not picked the first tomato from my garden this year, but I will soon. This has been one of the strangest growing seasons for backyard gardeners in recent memory. It was chilly and wet early, with a killing late frost, and then extremely hot and dry. But it appears August and September will be tolerable. I put out my tomato plants in late April and the vines prospered (except for one … [Read more...]
A Ben-Hur Hot Dog
Nancy and I don’t go to many movies these days, mostly because there is rarely anything playing that we want to see. I’m not big into body parts being blown into smithereens, nor sophomoric chick and guy flicks with actors trying to out-gross one other. A remake of Ben-Hur, however, caught our attention. The film was playing at Violet Crown, a modern theater on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall … [Read more...]
The Eagles and the Crows
From Sherman Shifflett This story came from a gentleman who runs a 2,000-acre corn farm near Barron, Wisconsin, not far from Oshkosh. He once flew F-4Es and F-16s for the National Guard and participated in the first Gulf War. Here is his account about two eagles and three crows: I was planting corn to finish a field before the next morning when I witnessed “The Great … [Read more...]
Cowlings is Open
Good news, barbeque lovers. Cowlings Bar-B-Q in Waverly is not out of business. I got some bad information and announced in the last issue of CvilleBuzz that Cowlings had shuttered their doors. Several readers expressed their disappointment, but advised that it was open as recently as last month. They were right. Cowlings, the best barbeque joint in Virginia, is open for business. When I called … [Read more...]
Working On A Tan
It is really a miracle that there is even one Boomer still alive. For the most part, our generation worshipped at the altar of the sun, fearing nothing except that we might be the palest among our friends. Boomer moms would on occasion suggest that we use some suntan lotion. Remember the little girl in the Coppertone ad with her white butt cheeks showing? Who wanted to look like the Coppertone … [Read more...]
Peck’s Barbeque
My friend Sherman Shifflett and I have been reminiscing recently about barbeque restaurants, or actually, the lack of really good ones in Virginia. Go down to eastern North Carolina and there are more Five Star barbeque joints than tobacco fields. But here in the Commonwealth, it’s a different story. What I considered the best in the state, Cowling’s in Wakefield, closed its doors and many … [Read more...]
