News From Nags Head

January 5, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Capt. Reese Stecher   There has not been much in the way of striper fishing in the sound for the past couple weeks. I did take two clients out for a couple of hours on New Year's Day afternoon. We hit a wreck for Tautog. The boys weeded through a couple of throwbacks and landed four fish for dinner. Henry did something that I haven't seen in 20 years of charter fishing. He landed a … [Read more...]

Jay Birds

January 5, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Some of the most entertaining birds in our back yard are the blue jays. Jays often get bad press because they sometimes destroy nests of other birds. They are very opportunistic and will kill baby birds and eat other bird eggs if given the chance. But they are one of the smartest birds on the planet and I enjoy sharing my back yard with a small, resident flock. Recently, I was in the backyard … [Read more...]

A Losing Proposition

January 5, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Happy New Year, fellow CvilleBuzzers! Hope you all had a great Christmas and holiday season. From the looks of most of our waistlines, it looks like we all ate well! Too well, most likely, which means it’s time to shed a few pounds. Losing a little weight, by the way, does not necessarily mean a diet. It means watching what you eat and using some common sense. A few years ago, I had gained so … [Read more...]

Deer Nuggets

January 5, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman T. Shifflett   Any part of the deer can be used for Deer Nuggets, but I always use the back-strap. This recipe is for one loin. Marinate the loin in tomato juice over night in the refrigerator. Make sure the loin is completely covered by tomato juice. Sprinkle in a little salt and add a little vinegar. Remove the loin and cut all the white membrane off, or as much as … [Read more...]

Where’s The Beef

December 29, 2016 by Jim Brewer

A movie called “The Founder” will hit the silver screen in January. It’s a film portraying Michael Keaton starring as Ray Kroc, the founder of Mickey D’s – McDonald’s. It takes us back to 1955 when Kroc went in business with the original McDonald brothers and grew the franchise to its current state as the world’s second largest private employer (behind Wal-Mart). Today, McDonald’s serves some 68 … [Read more...]

Rockfish Season Ends

December 29, 2016 by Jim Brewer

It ain’t over till it’s over, but it’s just about over – rockfish season, that is. The season officially ends on Saturday, Dec. 31. Says Dr. Julie Ball: When anglers are able to get out on the water, some very large rockfish await within Chesapeake Bay waters. Although the bite for these super-sized fish is rarely off the charts, consistent action with fish pushing to over 45 and 50-pounds … [Read more...]

Saltwater News

December 29, 2016 by Jim Brewer

A program called the Virginia Saltwater Tournament has been in place since 1958. The program awards anglers who catch fish of a certain size and promotes the saltwater fishery in Virginia. It also generates vital fishing data and records catches of species not otherwise available. However, in the Governor’s proposed budget for fiscal 2018, the program would be cancelled. But wait a minute! … [Read more...]

It’s Suet Time

December 29, 2016 by Jim Brewer

There are not a lot of insects flitting about in cold weather. Yet, many birds are insect feeders, needing the extra protein that bugs can provide. Serious birders can help the cause with a little suet, especially important to birds in the winter. Genuine suet is the raw, hard fat of beef or mutton found around the kidneys or loins. The British actually use this suet to cook with (shudder) in … [Read more...]

Carolina Golf

December 29, 2016 by Jim Brewer

We have some wonderful golf courses in Virginia, but in North Carolina, they teach kindergarten children how to putt before they learn to write. North Carolina is, in fact, loaded with golf courses. It’s hard to drive 20 miles in any direction without seeing acres of lush green grass dotted with white sand and accentuated with 18 red flags. I spent Christmas and the day after in Greensboro and … [Read more...]
