A Trusty Pocketknife

January 12, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Can you imagine what would happen if a seven year old boy brought a pocket knife to school today? When discovered, the school would be swarming with a swat team and metal sniffing German Shepherds and the child would be in shackles, followed soon by his negligent parents. Perish the thought of a pocketknife in the hands of a young boy. Yet…every single Boomer boy that I knew had a … [Read more...]

Striper Action at Buggs

January 12, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Bobcats Lake Country Store says striper action is good at Buggs Island Lake. Fish are back in most of the major creeks feeding on shad, and can be caught live-baiting with shad and jumbo minnows or by casting lures. Fishermen are getting good numbers of fish, though keepers are harder to come by.   James at Lynchburg Tom Reisdorf at Angler’s Lane says the James is currently too cold … [Read more...]

Chicken Thigh Burritos

January 12, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I cook for kids on occasion. Sometimes they are picky and sometimes they are not. One of the times they are not picky at all is when I fix a batch of burritos. Nothing fancy, just burritos. Recently, for a change of pace, rather than beef burritos with ground meat, I made some chicken burritos. I used chicken thighs and they were delicious. Chicken thighs, skin-on, bone in, are among the best … [Read more...]

Deer Season in Review

January 12, 2017 by Jim Brewer

It’s way early to get a final tally for Virginia’s deer season, but if the results from a local hunt club are any indication, the kill may be off statewide. Results show that for at least one hunt club, the total number of deer killed is down. While some nice animals were harvested, like this handsome buck taken by Robert Runnet (left) on the last day if the season, Sherman Shifflett of Louisa … [Read more...]

What Have You Got to Lose Chicken Salad

January 12, 2017 by Jim Brewer

In “A Losing Proposition” a new category introduced to CvilleBuzz readers last week, we will be exploring dishes that are both appetizing and healthy, healthy in that it will help us shed a few pounds. A diet is only be a temporary bandage on a more serious wound if it doesn’t taste good and isn’t satisfying. In my experience, a critical part of losing weight comes at lunch. I know lots of … [Read more...]

A Critter Feast

January 12, 2017 by Jim Brewer

With last week’s snow covering the ground, I made sure my birds and backyard friends had plenty of seeds and fresh water. Hundreds of birds and squirrels came to the heated birdbath for a much-needed drink of water and they devoured the seeds I had strewn. While watching one snowy morning, I noted that the squirrels were busy with the sunflower seeds, but there was not a bird in sight. In a tall … [Read more...]

Continue Bagging

January 5, 2017 by Jim Brewer

In an effort to save money and frustrate customers, Boomers have noticed that most grocery stores have installed do-it-yourself checkout stations where people who have always wanted to bag their own groceries can have at it. No longer will a loaf of bread be placed beneath two 48 ounce jars of pasta sauce nor a carton of eggs be lumped in with several liters of roly-poly bottles of Seven Up. For … [Read more...]

Resolve To Fish More

January 5, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Capt. Steve Chaconas   There is good winter fishing in key areas on the Potomac River, but use lighter line and downsized lures. The water is between 38-45, depending where you’re fishing. Outgoing tides are often warmer. Fish during the warmest part of the day. Dress in layers, wear a PFD, and fish with a buddy. The best spots are out of the current in areas with steep drops like … [Read more...]
