Homemade Hot Dog Chili
My name is Jim Brewer. I am a Hot Dog-aholic. I am a “Frank-enstein”. I love wieners. Some of my favorite places to eat out include hot dog joints. Jack ‘N Jil in Charlottesville and Jim’s Drive-In in Lewisburg, WV come to mind. And I love to put a few franks on the grill from time to time. I always make extra and eat them heated up for lunches throughout the week. I enjoy hot dogs because … [Read more...]
Tuna Out of Oregon Inlet
By Dr. Ken Neill, III The wind has been the most persistent fishing story. That and the return of winter-like temperatures have severely limited fishing activity. When boats can get out, Bluefin tuna have generated most of the excitement. Boats fishing out of Oregon Inlet are catching Bluefin tuna in the 250 to over 500 pound range. Yellowfin tuna are also available. Blackfin tuna can be … [Read more...]
Perfect Brookie Conditions
By Mossy Creek Oiutfitters The peak brook trout season is basically here. Water levels are still under average flow but hopefully this snowfall and rain later in the week will help. Keep an eye out for nasty wind through Thursday. We are hopeful warm weather will return by the end of the weekend and the brook trout fishing will fire back up again. Keep your fingers crossed for more wet weather … [Read more...]
Homemade Ice Cream
A big event in the lives of many young Boomers was churning a batch of homemade ice cream. It’s difficult to conceive that kids today – with all their video games, cell phones, sophisticated electronics and countless school and after-school activities – could ever get excited about making homemade ice cream, but we did! And the memories of family gatherings and the rich, creamy taste of freshly … [Read more...]
A Short Round of Golf
Played golf yesterday with my three Amigos. We were having a spirited round, with Greg and I one hole up on Kevin and Troy with three holes to play. Then the golf marshal approached us and said we had to turn in the carts at 5:30, and it was 5:30. We had teed off at 2 pm and would have completed our round in a timely 4 hours. But it wasn’t to be. We had to turn in our carts – couldn’t even … [Read more...]
Deer Kill Off
Deer Kill Graph Since 1947 There is an elephant in the room. For the recently completed 2016/17 hunting season, Virginia’s deer hunters tagged a total of 180,121 deer. That total represents a 16% decrease from the previous year’s harvest of 209.197. Game Department officials said that a good mast crop and diseases in previous years were responsible for the rather dramatic drop. … [Read more...]
Capers and Chicken Picatta
Capers are interesting little critters. Though they look like a small green pea, they are actually flower buds picked from a shrub-like bush. Then they are sun-dried, brined and packed in salt. The little fellows are fairly pricey since they have to be picked by hand. They are grown in California and Asia, parts of Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean. The tasty buds are the stars of the … [Read more...]
Lighting Trends
How They Affect Us By Nancy Brewer A trend is the general direction in which something is developing or changing. We often think of apparel trends and what’s in fashion. I have enjoyed the trends where blouses and shirts have the crooked or zigzag look at the bottom of the garment. It takes the eyes away from the waist and hips and actually flatters the figure. I try to … [Read more...]
Carmello’s Restaurant 7 Wine Bar
Last week, Nancy and I celebrated our 49th anniversary and decided to extend the celebration throughout the weekend. We went to the Aberdeen Barn the first night, and then decided (on Nancy’s recommendation) to try Carmello’s Restaurant & Wine Bar in the nearby Shopper’s World. Carmello’s has been in Charlottesville since 1992, and until recently was located near UVA on Emmett Street. I had … [Read more...]
