Yummy, It’s Yummly

May 25, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I don’t know how I got hooked up with this website, but a recipe I saw in a pop-up ad caught my attention. The site was “Yummly”. They offered to send me weekly recipes, so I said, “What the heck, if I don’t like it, I’ll sign off.” Boy do I like it. I read each recipe and have used several already. This is a great site for all sorts of “Yummy Yummlies”. Below is one of their recipes for No … [Read more...]

Feeding The Pigeons

May 18, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I was born in Raleigh, NC and spent my early years there with my mom, my grandmother (Mama Ida), an aunt and an uncle. My father had been killed in the war, just before I was born, and it would be a few more years before mom met and married Daddy George, who became like a real Daddy to me. But while in Raleigh, one of my great joys and memories was feeding the pigeons in the park on the state … [Read more...]

‘Gills at Lake Orange

May 18, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Lake Orange offers some of the best bluegill fishing in the state. The rich waters at Orange grow big ‘gills and the clean, clear water makes them especially good to eat. Now is the time to catch some. The big males are guarding the beds. Popping bugs and wet flies are proven bluegill catchers, but a juicy red wiggler or a fat mealworm will also trigger strikes. Lake Orange offers boat rentals … [Read more...]

Stripers at Kill Devil Hills

May 18, 2017 by Jim Brewer

TW’s reports: The big news on the northern beaches of the Outer Banks was Mark Gwaltney’s 38-inch striper that weighed 24 pounds. Gwaltney was surf fishing at Kill Devil Hills when the school happened by. Also beached at Nags Head were blues, sea mullet and trout. On Wednesday, the SW winds were at 9 and the water temp was 61 degrees. The Little Bridge on the Nags Head/Manteo causeway reported … [Read more...]

Pop Up Parchment

May 18, 2017 by Jim Brewer

I have recently discovered the joy of parchment paper, not just for baking cookies and using beneath other objects that stick to the pan, but for anything you’d like to cook that makes cleaning up an easier task. So I have been burning through the parchment paper. A few weeks back – completely out of the non-stick stuff – I saw an interesting product beside the normal rolls of parchment paper. … [Read more...]

Move Better Voted Number One

May 18, 2017 by Jim Brewer

Thank you Charlottesville! We were excited to learn that our patients voted our practice number one in Charlottesville for Physical Therapy in a Daily Progress poll. Our approach to patient care is unique because we do not use aides or assistants to supervise therapeutic exercise time with our patients, but only highly trained physical therapists. We have found that this approach improves … [Read more...]

Remembering Birds

May 18, 2017 by Jim Brewer

By Sherman Shifflett   After a recent article about birds in CvilleBuzz, I started thinking about the birds I saw as a kid and how many of those species have become scarce. My family left Covesville in 1957, and I don't think I have seen a Baltimore Oriole since then. I remember a sycamore tree near our bus stop and I used to see the orioles in that tree. Seems to me that they built … [Read more...]

Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks

May 18, 2017 by Jim Brewer

It’s always exciting to see a new bird at your feeder. Not that the old faithful’s aren’t worthy visitors, but to see an unfamiliar bird is special. About two weeks ago, I saw such a bird. It was a cloudy day and early in the morning, so the light wasn’t good, but I did not recognize the bird on the sunflower heart feeder. I had a hunch and looked it up and it was, as I thought, a female … [Read more...]
